John Dennis (dramatist)
John Dennis (16 September 1658 – 6 January 1734) was an English critic and dramatist. Life He was born in the parish of St Andrew Holborn, London, in 1658. He was educated at Harrow School and Caius College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. degree in 1679. In the next year he was fined and dismissed from his college for having wounded a fellow student with a sword. He was, however, received at Trinity Hall, where he took his M.A. degree in 1683. After travelling in France and Italy, he settled in London, where he became acquainted with Dryden, and close to Wycherley, Congreve and the leading literary figures of his day; and being made temporarily independent by inheriting a small fortune, he devoted himself to literature. The Duke of Marlborough procured him a place as one of the queen's waiters in the customs with a salary of £20 a year. Jackie Dennis
Jackie Dennis (8 October 1942 – 28 September 2020) was a Scottish singer. He was discovered by the comedians Mike and Bernie Winters in 1958. The brothers brought him to the attention of the show business agent Eve Taylor, and he appeared on the television programme, ''Six-Five Special'', at the age of 15, and in a subsequent film spin-off. Chart success The kilt-wearing, spiky-haired pop singer enjoyed seven successful years in the show business and toured the world. "La Dee Dah" was his biggest UK hit, reaching number 4 in the UK Singles Chart in 1958, whilst his cover of Sheb Wooley's "Purple People Eater" was his second and final UK hit, peaking at number 29. Dennis appeared on Perry Como's US television show, where he was introduced as 'Britain's Ricky Nelson' performing the song "Linton Addie". Jack Dennis (cricketer)
John Newman Dennis (4 January 1913 – 21 August 2006) was an English cricketer. Dennis was a right-handed batsman. He was born at Leytonstone, Essex. He was educated at Forest School, Walthamstow. Dennis made his first-class debut for Essex against Glamorgan in the 1934 County Championship. A further first-class appearance came in 1936, while in the following three seasons he made a handful of appearances in each, making a total of 22 appearances between 1934 and 1939. In his 22 first-class appearances, he scored 530 runs at a batting average of 17.66, with a high score of 53. This score, which was his only first-class fifty, came against Sussex in 1937. Jack Bonnell Dennis (born October 13, 1931) is a computer scientist and Emeritus Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The work of Dennis in computer systems and computer languages is recognized to have played a key role in hacker culture. As a Massachusetts Institute of Technology faculty member he sponsored easier access to computer facilities at MIT during the early development of the subculture. Much of what would later become Unix came from his early collaboration with Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson. This collaborative and open philosophy lives on today. Dennis was also a member of the historic Tech Model Railroad Club, which incubated much of the early slang and traditions of hacking. Dennis Specialist Vehicles
Dennis Specialist Vehicles was an English manufacturer of commercial vehicles based in Guildford, building buses, fire engines, lorries (trucks) and municipal vehicles such as dustcarts. All vehicles were made to order to the customer's requirements and more strongly built than mass production equivalents. For most of the 20th century the Dennis company was Guildford's main employer. Following a decade of financial difficulties original shareholders sold out in 1972 and Dennis's ownership has since passed through quite a number of hands. The Woodbridge site was sold and a new small factory built in Slyfield remains in use by lineal business descendant, bus-maker Alexander Dennis. No Dennis haulage trucks have been built since 1985. John David Dennis Jr. (born 6 August 1959) is a British diplomat who was the British Ambassador to Angola from 2014 to 2018 and the Director of Green Corridors and Ivory Trade at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for the Illegal Wildlife Trade Conference 2018. He is currently the British Representative to Taiwan, heading the British Office Taipei. Consular career Dennis joined the FCO in 1981 as a Desk Officer for Tanzania and Uganda. In 1982, he started a language course to become proficient at Mandarin and in 1985, was posted to the Embassy of the United Kingdom, Beijing as second secretary. In 1987 Dennis was recalled to the FCO to be head of the Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei section. He stayed in this post until 1989 when he was re-assigned to be the head of the Recruitment Section. John Dennis (19 June 1931 – 13 April 2020) was an Anglican bishop, who served as Bishop of Knaresborough, and then for ten years as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. In retirement he was an honorary assistant bishop in the Diocese of Winchester. Education Dennis was born to (Hubert) Ronald Dennis (1899–1990) and Evelyn, daughter of Leonard Joseph Neville-Polley, a science tutor and author who wrote a biography of the chemist and physicist John Dalton. His father, Ronald Dennis, was the son of a South Yorkshire coal hewer, and served as a platoon commander on the Western Front (World War I), Western Front in World War I. John Dennis (1771–1806)
John Dennis (December 17, 1771 – August 17, 1806) was a Representative from Maryland. Dennis was born at his family home, Beverly, in Pocomoke City in the Province of Maryland, on December 17, 1771. He completed preparatory studies at Washington Academy, attended Yale College; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1793 and commenced practice in Somerset County, Maryland. He later served two terms in the Maryland House of Delegates, before being elected as a Federalist to the United States House of Representatives, where he served from March 4, 1797 to March 3, 1805. During that time, Dennis was one of the House managers appointed in 1798 to conduct the impeachment proceedings against Senator William Blount of Tennessee. He was the father of John Dennis (1807–1859) and uncle of Littleton Purnell Dennis. John Clint Dennis (July 31, 1917 – February 15, 2000) was an American politician from the state of Missouri. Born in Patton, Missouri, he was sheriff of Scott County, Missouri from 1951 until 1976. In 1963, he was elected president of the Missouri Sheriffs' Association. He later served as a Democrat in the Missouri state senate from 1976 until 1992. He served as a marine during World War II.
