John Dennis (1771–1806)
John Dennis (December 17, 1771 – August 17, 1806) was a Representative from Maryland. Dennis was born at his family home, Beverly, in Pocomoke City in the Province of Maryland, on December 17, 1771. He completed preparatory studies at Washington Academy, attended Yale College; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1793 and commenced practice in Somerset County, Maryland. He later served two terms in the Maryland House of Delegates, before being elected as a Federalist to the United States House of Representatives, where he served from March 4, 1797 to March 3, 1805. During that time, Dennis was one of the House managers appointed in 1798 to conduct the impeachment proceedings against Senator William Blount of Tennessee. He was the father of John Dennis (1807–1859) and uncle of Littleton Purnell Dennis. Jackie Dennis
Jackie Dennis (8 October 1942 – 28 September 2020) was a Scottish singer. He was discovered by the comedians Mike and Bernie Winters in 1958. The brothers brought him to the attention of the show business agent Eve Taylor, and he appeared on the television programme, ''Six-Five Special'', at the age of 15, and in a subsequent film spin-off. Chart success The kilt-wearing, spiky-haired pop singer enjoyed seven successful years in the show business and toured the world. "La Dee Dah" was his biggest UK hit, reaching number 4 in the UK Singles Chart in 1958, whilst his cover of Sheb Wooley's "Purple People Eater" was his second and final UK hit, peaking at number 29. Jack Dennis (cricketer)
John Newman Dennis (4 January 1913 – 21 August 2006) was an English cricketer. Dennis was a right-handed batsman. He was born at Leytonstone, Essex. He was educated at Forest School, Walthamstow. Dennis made his first-class debut for Essex against Glamorgan in the 1934 County Championship. A further first-class appearance came in 1936, while in the following three seasons he made a handful of appearances in each, making a total of 22 appearances between 1934 and 1939. In his 22 first-class appearances, he scored 530 runs at a batting average of 17.66, with a high score of 53. This score, which was his only first-class fifty, came against Sussex in 1937. Jack Bonnell Dennis (born October 13, 1931) is a computer scientist and Emeritus Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The work of Dennis in computer systems and computer languages is recognized to have played a key role in hacker culture. As a Massachusetts Institute of Technology faculty member he sponsored easier access to computer facilities at MIT during the early development of the subculture. Much of what would later become Unix came from his early collaboration with Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson. This collaborative and open philosophy lives on today. Dennis was also a member of the historic Tech Model Railroad Club, which incubated much of the early slang and traditions of hacking. Dennis Specialist Vehicles
Dennis Specialist Vehicles was an English manufacturer of commercial vehicles based in Guildford, building buses, fire engines, lorries (trucks) and municipal vehicles such as dustcarts. All vehicles were made to order to the customer's requirements and more strongly built than mass production equivalents. For most of the 20th century the Dennis company was Guildford's main employer. Following a decade of financial difficulties original shareholders sold out in 1972 and Dennis's ownership has since passed through quite a number of hands. The Woodbridge site was sold and a new small factory built in Slyfield remains in use by lineal business descendant, bus-maker Alexander Dennis. No Dennis haulage trucks have been built since 1985. John Stoughton Dennis
Lieutenant-Colonel John Stoughton Dennis (19 October 1820 – 7 July 1885) was a Canadian surveyor, militia officer, and civil servant, born in Kingston, Upper Canada. In 1866, Dennis led an ill-fated militia attack against the Fenians at Fort Erie. Dennis is noted for his role in precipitating the Red River Rebellion by his 1869 surveys of the Red River Colony. He was the father of Colonel John Stoughton Dennis Jr., who also became a noted surveyor and militia officer. John Dennis (1807 – November 1, 1859) was an American politician. Born at "Beckford", near Princess Anne, Maryland, he completed preparatory and law studies. After being admitted to the bar, he commenced the practice of law and also engaged in agricultural pursuits. He served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1835 to 1836, and was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses, serving from March 4, 1837, to March 3, 1841. He later served as a delegate to the State constitutional convention of 1850. He died at his place of birth, "Beckford".
