John Davy (chemist)
John Davy FRS FRSE (24 May 1790 – 24 January 1868) was a Cornish doctor, amateur chemist, brother of the noted chemist Sir Humphry Davy, and cousin of Edmund Davy. During his career, Davy discovered phosgene, silicon tetrafluoride, and concluded that chlorine was an element. Life John Davy was born in Penzance, Cornwall, on 24 May 1790, the son of Robert Davy and his wife, Grace Millet. He assisted his older brother Humphry at the Royal Institution of Great Britain for two years before heading to Edinburgh University, where he earned his degree in medicine in 1814. In 1812, Davy discovered phosgene, a compound he also named. At the same time, he concluded that chlorine was an element. A right-handed batsman and left-arm fast-medium bowler, he made his debut for the Ireland cricket team in a match against Scotland on July 1997 and went on to play for them in crucial matches. John Davy (composer)
John Davy (23 December 1763 – 22 February 1824) was an English composer, particularly of music for stage productions in London. Life Davy was born at Creedy Bridge, in the parish of Upton Hellions, eight miles from Exeter, the illegitimate son of Sarah Davie or Davy. He was brought up by his maternal uncle, a blacksmith of Upton Hellions, who also played the cello in the church choir. At less than five years of age he could play on the fife any simple tune after once or twice hearing it. Before he was six years old, Davy selected as many horseshoes, borrowed from a neighbouring smith, as formed a complete octave, hung them from a wall, and with a small rod imitated the chimes of the neighbouring church of Crediton "with great exactness". John Davey or Davy (1812–1891) was a Cornish farmer who was one of the last people with some traditional knowledge of the Cornish language.Bruxelles, Simon de (21 May 2008)"After centuries, Cornish agree how to speak their language" ''The Times''. John Charles Davy (8 August 1927 – 28 October 1984) was a British journalist and science editor for ''The Observer'', lecturer, vice-principal of Emerson College and Anthroposophist. Biography Early life John Davy was born to the journalist couple Charles and Doris Davy in London. He had a younger brother who, as he did, became a journalist. From the early 1930s onwards, both parents were intimately connected to the work of Anthroposophy. Charles Davy wrote a number of books, amongst others ''The Three Spheres of Society'' (1946) on Social threefolding, while Doris Davy wrote travelogues and children’s books. John Davy Hayward
John Davy Hayward CBE (2 February 1905 – 17 September 1965) was an English editing, editor, critic, anthologist and bibliophile. Early life Hayward was educated at Gresham's School and in France before going up to King's College, Cambridge in 1923 to read English and modern languages. While still a Cambridge undergraduate, he edited and published the ''Collected Works of the Earl of Rochester''. Career From 1927, Hayward lived in London, working as an editor, critic, anthologist and bibliographer. He edited many of Jonathan Swift's works. In 1929, he edited ''John Donne, Dean of St Paul's: Complete Poetry and Selected Prose'' for the Nonesuch Press.
