John Darrow
John Darrow (born Harry Simpson; 17 July 1907 – 24 February 1980) was an American actor of the late silent and early talking film eras. Biography Born in Leonia, New Jersey in 1907, Darrow began acting in theater with a stock company, right after graduating high school. Shortly after, he would begin his film career with a featured role in the 1927 silent film, ''High School Hero''. After several films with featured roles, he was cast as the lead in 1931's ''The Lady Refuses'', which co-stars Betty Compson and was directed by George Archainbaud. He would spend the next five years in leading man or featured roles, before retiring from acting in 1935. He would appear in five films that year, although four of them were produced in 1934. His final screen appearance would be in a supporting role in ''Annapolis Farewell''. ''Probation'' (also known as ''Second Chances'') is an American Pre-Code 1932 film directed by Richard Thorpe and starring Clara Kimball Young and Betty Grable. The film was distributed by the Chesterfield Motion Pictures Corporation. Plot Ruth (Betty Grable) is a minor who is running with an uptown, older man. Ruth's brother, Nick (John Darrow), is unaware of his kid sister's activities. Ruth is turned in to the juvenile authorities by the well-meaning Mrs. Humphries (Clara Kimball Young). Nick finds a man in their apartment and proceeds to be arrested for beating up the man, who runs away before Nick is arrested. ''Everything's Rosie'' is a 1931 American Pre-Code slapstick comedy film directed by Clyde Bruckman, from a screenplay by Ralph Spence, Tim Whelan, and Al Boasberg, based on a story by Boasberg. Although the screenplay was credited as original, it bore a striking resemblance to a 1923 play, ''Poppy'', which had starred W.C. Fields. The film starred Robert Woolsey, one-half of the comedy team of Wheeler & Woolsey, and was an attempt by RKO Radio Pictures to capitalize on the popularity of the comedy duo, having each of the team star in their own solo films. The film also starred Anita Louise and John Darrow, but was a critical failure, although it did manage not to lose money in a year when most RKO films did exactly that.
