John D. McKenzie
John Douglas McKenzie (December 1, 1889 – April 28, 1952) was an American-born businessman and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented the riding of Annapolis in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1933 to 1945 as a Liberal member. He was born in Gilby, North Dakota, the son of Alexander McKenzie and Isabella Douglas. McKenzie came to Canada in 1892 with his family and moved to Nova Scotia in 1914. In 1916, he married Sadie Walker. He was manager of a creamery in LaHave and opened his own creamery in Middleton in 1923. McKenzie was mayor of Middleton. He served on the province's Executive Council as Minister of Highways and Public Works from 1941 to 1945. Executive Council Of Nova Scotia
The Executive Council of Nova Scotia (informally and more commonly, the Cabinet of Nova Scotia) is the cabinet of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Almost always made up of members of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, the Cabinet is similar in structure and role to the Canadian Cabinet while being smaller in size with different portfolios. The Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, as representative of the King in Right of Nova Scotia, heads the council, and is referred to as the Governor-in-Council. Other members of the Cabinet, who advise, or minister, the viceroy, are selected by the Premier of Nova Scotia and appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor. Middleton, Nova Scotia
Middleton is a town in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Situated on the north bank of the Annapolis River, it is located close to the centre of the Annapolis Valley, from which it gets its nickname, "The Heart of the Valley". History Where the Annapolis River and the Nictaux river meet was a popular shad fishing spot for Mi'kmaq families before the arrival of the European settlers. It would be later settled by French Acadians that used these waterways to reach the capital of Port-Royal and farming. In the late 1750s the region was settled by New England Planters, and Loyalists to replace the ousted French Acadians. LaHave (''La Hève'') is a Canadian community in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. The community is located across the river from Riverport and approximately 15 kilometres from the town of Bridgewater. Once the capital of Acadia, it is located on Highway 331 at the mouth of the 97 km long LaHave River. Creamery
A creamery is a place where milk and cream are processed and where butter and cheese is produced. Cream is separated from whole milk; pasteurization is done to the skimmed milk and cream separately. Whole milk for sale has had some cream returned to the skimmed milk. The creamery is the source of butter from a dairy. Cream is an emulsion of fat-in-water; the process of churning causes a phase inversion to butter which is an emulsion of water-in-fat. Excess liquid as buttermilk is drained off in the process. Modern creameries are automatically controlled industries, but the traditional creamery needed skilled workers. Traditional tools included the butter churn and Scotch hands. The term "creamery is sometimes used in retail trade as a place to buy milk products such as yogurt and ice cream.
