John Cunningham (journalist)
John Cunningham (June 1945 – 8 February 2012) an Irish journalist from Salthill, Galway (originally from Tuam, County Galway). He was national journalist of the year in 1979. He was editor of the ''Waterford News & Star'' from 1982 to 1984 and editor of the ''Connacht Tribune The ''Connacht Tribune'' (''An Curadh Connachtach'') is a newspaper circulating chiefly in County Galway, Ireland. The main regional newspaper for the county, the Tribune Group prints two titles every week - the ''Connacht Tribune'' on Thursday ...'' from 1984 to 2007. Cunningham was also a journalism lecturer in National University of Ireland, Galway. He was awarded an honorary MA in 2006 by NUIG. He was married to his wife, Nuala, with whom he had four sons - Shane, Ivor, Gary and Enda. He died in 2012 following a battle with cancer. The Irish ( ga, Muintir na hÉireann or ''Na hÉireannaigh'') are an ethnic group and nation native to the island of Ireland, who share a common history and culture. The ''Waterford News & Star'' is a local newspaper based in the Irish city of Waterford, first published as the ''Waterford Star'' in 1848. In December 2007, it changed from a broadsheet to a tabloid. The ''Connacht Tribune'' (''An Curadh Connachtach'') is a newspaper circulating chiefly in County Galway, Ireland. The main regional newspaper for the county, the Tribune Group prints two titles every week - the ''Connacht Tribune'' on Thursday and the ''Galway City Tribune'' on Friday. Connacht Tribune Group newspapers are circulated in every district of the City and every town and village in the County. As of January 2007, its weekly readership is over 150,000. Connacht Tribune People
Connacht ( ; ga, Connachta or ), is one of the provinces of Ireland, in the west of Ireland. Until the ninth century it consisted of several independent major Gaelic kingdoms (Uí Fiachrach, Uí Briúin, Uí Maine, Conmhaícne, and Delbhna). Between the reigns of Conchobar mac Taidg Mór (died 882) and his descendant, Aedh mac Ruaidri Ó Conchobair (reigned 1228–33), it became a kingdom under the rule of the Uí Briúin Aí dynasty, whose ruling sept adopted the surname Ua Conchobair. At its greatest extent, it incorporated the often independent Kingdom of Breifne, as well as vassalage from the lordships of western Mide and west Leinster. Two of its greatest kings, Tairrdelbach Ua Conchobair (1088–1156) and his son Ruaidri Ua Conchobair (c. 1115–1198) greatly expanded the kingdom's dominance, so much so that both became High King of Ireland.
