John Cowell (jurist)
John Cowell (1554 – 11 October 1611) was an English jurist. Life Born at Ernesborough (now Irishborough), in the parish of Swimbridge in North Devon. He was a chorister in the Choir of King's College, Cambridge and was then educated at Eton College before returning as a scholar at King's College, Cambridge, where he was elected a fellow. In 1594 he became Regius Professor of Civil Law at Cambridge, and in 1598 master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He died at Oxford on 11 October 1611, soon after being released from prison, and was buried in Trinity Hall Chapel, Cambridge. Works In 1607, he compiled a law dictionary, ''The Interpreter'', in which he exalted the king's prerogative; he was prosecuted before the House of Commons by Sir Edward Coke, who had a hostile history with Cowell. He was saved from imprisonment only by the interposition of James I. His book was burnt by order of the House of Commons. The suppression order read in part: :''When Men goe out of their Element, ... John Cowell (RAF Airman)
John J. Cowell, (1889 – 30 July 1918) was an Irish soldier, airman and flying ace of the First World War. He was credited with sixteen aerial victories; fifteen of these were gained as an observer/gunner and one as a pilot, before he was killed in action. Early life and background Cowell was born in Limerick, one of ten children of Michael and Kate Cowell. First World War Cowell first served in the 12th Field Company of the Royal Engineers, where on 27 October 1916 Sapper (Acting Corporal) Cowell was awarded his first Military Medal. Cowell then transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, joining No. 20 Squadron as an observer/gunner during Bloody April 1917. He manned the guns of a F.E.2d fighter for such other aces as Richard M. Trevethan, Cecil Roy Richards, Reginald Condon, and Oliver Vickers. John Clayton Cowell
Major-General Sir John Clayton Cowell PC KCB (14 January 1832 – 29 August 1894) was a British Army officer and later Master of the Queen's Household and lieutenant-governor of Windsor Castle. Early life Clayton was born at Bean, near Canterbury, in 1832 the son of John Clayton Cowell and Frances Ann Hester, daughter of the Rev. Richard Brickenden. He was educated at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. In 1850 he joined the Royal Engineers, he served with the Baltic fleet and at Crimea, where he was '' aide-de-camp'' to General Sir Harry Jones and where he wounded himself on 10 August 1854 by accidentally discharging a revolver he had borrowed from Bartholomew Sulivan. He was sent to recuperate on the hospital ship ''Belleisle''. Royal household Clayton returned to England and from 1856 to 1866 he became governor to the young Prince Alfred, who in 1866 became the Duke of Edinburgh.
