John Compton (actor)
John Compton (born John Compton Tolley; June 21, 1923 – May 12, 2015) was an American actor. Compton was born John Compton Tolley in Lynchburg, Tennessee. In 1943, Compton left Lynchburg and went to Hollywood hoping to become an actor. He washed dishes at a restaurant and spent time around union halls seeking a break in the film industry. His next job was answering a telephone at Columbia Pictures Studio. Eventually he paid $100 to get a bit part in a film, but the results of that appearance offered little hope for his future. He gained experience by acting in other films, in summer stock theater, and on stage in New York. Compton starred in the television series '' The D.A.'s Man'' (1959). He appeared in the films ''Mildred Pierce'', ''Cheyenne'', ''Jesse James Rides Again'', ''Oh! Susanna'', ''Thunder Over Arizona'' and ''Spoilers of the Forest'', among others. Lynchburg is a city in the south-central region of the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is governed by a consolidated city-county government unit whose boundaries coincide with those of Moore County. Lynchburg is best known as the location of Jack Daniel's, whose famous Tennessee whiskey is marketed worldwide as the product of a city with only one traffic light. Despite the operational distillery, which is a major tourist attraction, Lynchburg's home county of Moore is a dry county. The population was 6,461 at the 2020 census. ''Night and Day'' is a 1946 Technicolor Warner Bros. biographical and musical film starring Cary Grant, in a fictionalized account of the life of American composer and songwriter Cole Porter. The movie was directed by Michael Curtiz and produced by Arthur Schwartz, with Jack L. Warner as executive producer. The screenplay was written by Charles Hoffman, Leo Townsend and William Bowers. The music score by Ray Heindorf and Max Steiner was nominated for an Academy Award. The film features several of the best-known Porter songs, including the title song " Night and Day," "Begin the Beguine," and " My Heart Belongs to Daddy."
