John Coates (producer)
John Coates (7 November 1927 – 16 September 2012) was a British film producer, best known for producing the animated film ''The Snowman'' based on the picture book by Raymond Briggs, one of the first animated productions screened on Channel Four and still repeated every year on the channel. He co-founded the animation studio TVC (Television Cartoons) London with George Dunning in 1957 and worked on The Beatles's animated feature '' Yellow Submarine'' and produced numerous other animated films including '' When the Wind Blows'', ''Granpa'', ''Father Christmas'', ''The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends'' and '' The Bear''. John's business partner for many years was Norman David Kauffman, who first worked with him at the age of 16 as a trainee animator. He became a Director of TVC and associated companies in 1999 until his retirement in 2012. The Snowman
''The Snowman'' is a 1982 British animated television film based on Raymond Briggs's 1978 picture book ''The Snowman.'' It was directed by Dianne Jackson for Channel 4. It was first shown on 26 December 1982, and was an immediate success. It was nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the 55th Academy Awards and won a BAFTA TV Award. The story is told through pictures, action and music, scored by Howard Blake. It has no words, with the exception of the central song, "Walking in the Air". The orchestral score was performed by the Sinfonia of London and the song was performed by Peter Auty, a St Paul's Cathedral choirboy. The film ranked at number 71 on the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes, a list drawn up by the British Film Institute in 2000, based on a vote by industry professionals. The Bear (1999 Film)
''The Bear'' is a 1998 British animated Christmas special directed by Hilary Audus. Based on the book of the same name by the author Raymond Briggs, the film was first broadcast on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom at Christmas 1998 and released in the United States as a Direct-to-Video release by Buena Vista Home Video in 1998. The show won a Peabody Award in 1998. In 2000, it won the Golden Butterfly Award for the best short film in the international cinema competition of the 15th Isfahan International Film Festival for Children and Youth in Iran. Like ''The Snowman'', the film does not have any spoken dialogue, although for the American version, Judi Dench narrates the film. The musical score was by Howard Blake and the end theme "Somewhere A Star Shines For Everyone" was sung by Charlotte Church. ''The Snowman and the Snowdog'' is a 2012 British animated short film. It is the sequel to ''The Snowman'', and was created to mark the 30th anniversary of the original short film. ''The Snowman and The Snowdog'' is dedicated to John Coates (the film's producer, who died in September 2012) and features a new song called "Light the Night" by Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows. Thomas Edward Lawrence (16 August 1888 – 19 May 1935) was a British archaeologist, army officer, diplomat, and writer who became renowned for his role in the Arab Revolt (1916–1918) and the Sinai and Palestine Campaign (1915–1918) against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. The breadth and variety of his activities and associations, and his ability to describe them vividly in writing, earned him international fame as Lawrence of Arabia, a title used for the 1962 film based on his wartime activities. Raymond Briggs
Raymond Redvers Briggs (18 January 1934 – 9 August 2022) was an English illustrator, cartoonist, graphic novelist and author. Achieving critical and popular success among adults and children, he is best known in Britain for his 1978 story ''The Snowman'', a book without words whose cartoon adaptation is televised and whose musical adaptation is staged every Christmas. Briggs won the 1966 and 1973 Kate Greenaway Medals from the British Library Association, recognising the year's best children's book illustration by a British subject. For the 50th anniversary of the Medal (1955–2005), a panel named ''Father Christmas'' (1973) one of the top-ten winning works, which composed the ballot for a public election of the nation's favourite.
