Sir John Child, 1st Baronet
Sir John Child, 1st Baronet (died 1690) was a governor of Bombay, and de facto (although not officially) the first governor-general of the British settlements in India. Born in London, Child was sent as a child to his uncle, the chief of the factory at Rajapur. on 27 October 1681, he was appointed chief of the East India Company's affairs at Surat and Bombay, while at the same time his namesake, stated to be unrelated by the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Sir Josiah Child, was governor of the company at home. The two men guided the affairs of the company through the period of struggle between the Mughals and Marathas. They have been credited by history with the change from unarmed to armed trade on the part of the company; however, both were actually loath to quarrel with the Mughal Empire. John Child (volleyball)
John Child (born May 4, 1967) is a retired professional Canadian male beach volleyball player. Child began playing beach volleyball in tournaments at age 16, and is a graduate of Centennial College. He played in three Olympic Games; Atlanta in 1996, Sydney in 2000, and Athens in 2004. He won the bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics The 1996 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XXVI Olympiad, also known as Atlanta 1996 and commonly referred to as the Centennial Olympic Games) were an international multi-sport event held from July 19 to August 4, 1996, in Atlanta, ..., partnering with Mark Heese. John and his partner were the first Canadian team to medal at the Olympics in the sport of volleyball. Child lives in Toronto, Ontario. He retired at age 38. He was coached by Hernan Humana.
