John Charles Haines
John Charles Haines (May 26, 1818 – July 4, 1896) served as mayor of Chicago, Illinois (1858–1860) for the Democratic Party. Biography John Charles Haines was born in Deerfield, New York on May 26, 1818. He arrived in Chicago on May 26, 1834 and took on work as a clerk for George W. Merrill. By 1846, he formed a partnership with Jared Gage and acquired several flour mills. Haines worked to organize the Chicago waterwork beginning in 1854. In 1848, he was elected to the first of six terms on the city council and two terms as the water commissioner. He was elected mayor in 1858 as a Republican, defeating Democrat Daniel Brainard with 54% of the vote. He successfully ran for re-election the following year against Marcus D. Gilman, winning with about 53% of the vote. Haines served as an elected members of the board of the Chicago Historical Society and on the Board of Health. Deerfield, New York
Deerfield is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 4,273 at the 2010 census. The Town of Deerfield is on the eastern border of the county and northeast of the City of Utica. History Deerfield was formed from the Town of Schuyler in 1798. In Walter D. Edmonds' 1936 novel "Drums Along the Mohawk" and the 1939 film of the same name, the story portrays settlers of the New York frontier in the 1700s. The main protagonists (played in the film by Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert) leave their luxurious home to build a small frontier farm in Deerfield in the Mohawk Valley. Chicago History Museum
Chicago History Museum is the museum of the Chicago Historical Society (CHS). The CHS was founded in 1856 to study and interpret Chicago's history. The museum has been located in Lincoln Park since the 1930s at 1601 North Clark Street at the intersection of North Avenue in the Old Town Triangle neighborhood. The CHS adopted the name, Chicago History Museum, in September 2006 for its public presence. History Much of the Chicago Historical Society's first collection was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, but the museum rose from the ashes like the city. Among its many documents which were lost in the fire was Abraham Lincoln's final draft of the Emancipation Proclamation.
