John Cameron, Lord Cameron
John Cameron, Lord Cameron, KT, DSC, PRSE, FBA (8 February 1900 – 30 May 1996) was a Scottish judge and President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh from 1973 to 1976. Life Cameron was born in London, the son of John Cameron SSC NP, a solicitor from Edinburgh. The family lived at 13 South Charlotte Street just off Charlotte Square. He attended Edinburgh Academy from 1910–17. He then studied law at the University of Edinburgh. This was interrupted by the First World War during which he served as a midshipman in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He resumed his studies after the war and qualified as an advocate in 1924. In 1936 he rose to be King's Counsel. In the Second World War he returned to the RNVR, this time as a lieutenant-commander, and participated both in the evacuation at Dunkirk and the D-Day landings. In 1945 he was made Sheriff of Inverness and served in this role until 1948. He returned to Edinburgh in 1948 to serve as Dean of the Faculty of Advocates. He w ... Order Of The Thistle
The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle is an order of chivalry associated with Scotland. The current version of the Order was founded in 1687 by King James VII of Scotland, who asserted that he was reviving an earlier Order. D-Day Landings
The Normandy landings were the landing operations and associated airborne operations on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The operation began the liberation of France (and later western Europe) and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front. Planning for the operation began in 1943. In the months leading up to the invasion, the Allies conducted a substantial military deception, codenamed Operation Bodyguard, to mislead the Germans as to the date and location of the main Allied landings. Kenneth John Cameron, Baron Cameron of Lochbroom PC FRSE (born 11 June 1931) is a retired Scottish judge who served as Lord Advocate from 1984 to 1989. Early life He is the son of John Cameron, Lord Cameron (1900–1996), a Senator of the College of Justice. Born in Edinburgh, he was educated at Edinburgh Academy, at Corpus Christi College, Oxford and at the University of Edinburgh, where he obtained a PhD in 1971 presenting the thesis "Anti-Corn-Law agitations in Scotland, with particular reference to the Anti-Corn-Law League". Judicial career He became an Advocate in 1958 and Queen's Counsel in 1972. He was appointed President of the Pensions Appeal Tribunal for Scotland in 1976, and Chairman of the Committee of Investigation under the Agricultural Marketing Act 1958 in 1980. Cockburn Association
The Cockburn Association (Edinburgh's Civic Trust) is one of the world's oldest architectural conservation and urban planning monitoring organisations, founded in 1875. The Scottish judge Henry Cockburn (1779–1854) was a prominent campaigner to protect and enhance the beauty of Edinburgh, notably resisting construction of new buildings on the south side of Princes Street. The association was founded in 1875 to continue the legacy of his work. Since 1991, the organisation has been responsible for Edinburgh's annual Doors Open Day scheme. The first major campaign by the association was to resist the removal of trees at Bruntsfield Links and the association has campaigned for the retention and improvement of Edinburgh's open and green spaces ever since.
