John Cairney
John Cairney (born 16 February 1930) is a Scottish film and television actor who is well known to audiences in Scotland and internationally through his one-man shows on Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Service, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and William McGonagall. He has worked as an actor, recitalist, lecturer, director and theatre consultant. He is also a published author and an exhibited painter. Trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, he was a notable Hamlet at the Citizens' Theatre and a successful Macbeth at the Edinburgh Festival. He was 'This Man Craig' on television, while his many films include ''Lucky Jim'', '' A Night to Remember'', ''Operation Bullshine'', ''The Flesh and the Fiends'', ''Victim'', ''Cleopatra'' and '' Jason and the Argonauts''. Tom "Tiny" Wharton OBE (3 November 1927 in Glasgow – 9 May 2005 in Newton Mearns) was a Scottish football referee in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Known as ''Tiny'', due to his colossal 6'4" frame, he was one of the most iconic and respected officials of his generation. He was raised in the Parkhead area of Glasgow; the brothers John Cairney (actor and writer) and Jim Cairney (footballer with York City) were childhood acquaintances. An engineer by profession, Wharton took up refereeing at the age of 21 and had reached Class I status within 3 years. Parkhead
Parkhead ( sco, Pairkheid) is a district in the East End of Glasgow. Its name comes from a small weaving hamlet at the meeting place of the Great Eastern Road (now the Gallowgate and Tollcross Road) and Westmuir Street. Glasgow's Eastern Necropolis cemetery was laid out in the area in 1847 beside the Gallowgate. History The area flourished with the discovery of coal in 1837 and grew into an industrial centre. Jim Cairney
James Cairney (born 13 July 1931) is a Scottish former professional footballer who played as a half-back in the Football League for York City, in Scottish junior football for Strathclyde and Shawfield Juniors, in North America for Toronto Roma, New York Ukrainians and Hartford Italia and was on the books of Portsmouth without making a league appearance. In 1958, he played in Canada's National Soccer League with the Polish White Eagles and was named to the All-Star team. He would play with league rivals Toronto Sparta for the 1959 season and once more was selected to the All-Star team. For the 1961 NSL season, Toronto Sparta was renamed, Toronto Roma.
