Sir John Boyd, 1st Baronet
Sir John Boyd, 1st Baronet Boyd (29 December 1718 in St Kitts, Leeward Islands – 24 January 1800 in Danson Hill) was a sugar merchant and vice-chairman of the British East India Company. He built Danson House, and was the first English owner of the Piranesi Vase. Life He was the only child of Augustus Boyd (1679–1765), a northern Irish merchant who owned several sugar estates on the islands and later moved to London to set up trade links there with the plantations. John went into this family business, but not before he had read theology and classics at Christ Church, Oxford and taken a Grand Tour of the continent. Settling in Lewisham and marrying his first wife, Mary Bumpstead, in the early 1740s, he purchased the lease at Danson in 1753, followed by the site he intended for Danson House in 1762, secured via an Act of Parliament. Sir John McFarlane Boyd (8 October 1917 – 30 April 1989) was a Scottish trade unionist. Born in Motherwell, Boyd attended the Glencairn Secondary School before taking an engineering apprenticeship. He became active in the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU), working full-time as a union organiser from 1946., and joining the union's executive in 1953. He was also prominent in the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions, serving as its president in 1964, and was first elected to the General Council of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in 1967. John Morton Boyd
John Morton Boyd CBE FRSE (31 January 1925 – 25 August 1998) was a British zoologist, writer and conservationist. He was a pioneer of nature conservation in Scotland. Life Boyd was born in Darvel, Ayrshire, the son of Thomas Boyd, master builder and Jeanie Morton. He was educated at Kilmarnock Academy. He then attended the University of Glasgow where he began a course in engineering before switching to zoology. As an undergraduate he studied sand dune snails on the island of Tiree in the Inner Hebrides, subsequently undertaking a doctoral study on the earthworms of the machair and further ecological research. Boyd was influenced by the writings of Seton Gordon and Frank Fraser Darling. He visited St Kilda and recognised the potential for research into its endemic fauna, including the Soay sheep, the St Kilda wren (a subspecies of the Eurasian wren), and the St Kilda field mouse. John Boyd (1912–2002) was a Northern Irish teacher, radio producer, and playwright. Noted for his ability to reproduce the speech of working class Belfast, he has been described as Northern Ireland's most important playwright, and encouraged the careers of other writers including Seamus Heaney and Stewart Parker. Early life and education John Boyd was born 19 July 1912 in a working class area of east Belfast. He was the first child of three born to Robert Boyd, a steam engine fireman and later a train driver, and Jane Boyd (née Leeman). Boyd attended Mountpottinger elementary school, and subsequently won a scholarship to the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. He later gained another scholarship, allowing him to attend Queen's University Belfast. A young Boyd was introduced by an uncle and aunt to theatre and the literature of the labour movement, which remained keystones of his life.
