John Beresford (Waterford MP)
John Beresford, PC, PC (Ire) (14 March 1738 – 5 November 1805) was an Anglo-Irish statesman. Background and education Beresford was a younger son of Sir Marcus Beresford, who, having married Catherine, sole heiress of James Power, 3rd Earl of Tyrone, was created Earl of Tyrone in 1746. After the death of the earl in 1763, Beresford's mother successfully asserted her claim ''suo jure'' to the barony of La Poer. John Beresford thus inherited powerful family connections. John Claudius Beresford
John Claudius Beresford (23 October 1766 – 20 July 1846) was an Irish Tory Member of the UK Parliament representing Dublin City 1801–1804 and County Waterford 1806–1811. Early life Beresford was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. From 1783, Beresford served as a storekeeper for the port of Dublin. He was subsequently appointed to a wealthy sinecure post of Inspector-General of Exports and Imports. He was returned by his father, Hon. John Beresford, for the family borough of Swords to the Irish House of Commons in 1790. In 1798 he was returned for Dublin City, helped by his position in the port, and as a partner in a leading Dublin bank and a member of Dublin Corporation. Admiral Sir John Poo (or de la Poer) Beresford, 1st Baronet, (1766 – 2 October 1844) was a Royal Navy admiral, Second Sea Lord and Conservative MP. Early life Beresford was born in 1766 at Waterford. He was an illegitimate son of George Beresford, 2nd Earl of Tyrone; as well as a number of legitimate half-siblings, Beresford was also brother to General William Beresford, 1st Viscount Beresford, another illegitimate son. Beresford was educated at Catterick Bridge in Yorkshire before he joined the Royal Navy in 1782. He was taken on as a protégé by Captain Lord Longford in the 74-gun ship of the line HMS ''Alexander'', as a captain's servant. John Beresford, 2nd Baron Decies (20 January 1774 – 1 March 1865) was an Irish peer and clergyman. His father, the 1st Baron Decies was son of Marcus Beresford, 1st Earl of Tyrone and Catherine de Poer, Countess of Tyrone. Early life Beresford was born on 20 January 1774. He was the second son of nine children born to William Beresford, 1st Baron Decies, and Elizabeth FitzGibbon. Through his brother, the Rev. Lord John George de la Poer Beresford (22 November 1773 – 18 July 1862) was an Anglican archbishop and Primate. Background Born at Tyrone House, Dublin, he was the second surviving son of George de La Poer Beresford, 1st Marquess of Waterford and his wife Elizabeth, only daughter of Henry Monck and maternal granddaughter of Henry Bentinck, 1st Duke of Portland. He attended Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1793 and a Master of Arts three years later. Career Beresford was ordained a priest in 1797 and began his ecclesiastical career with incumbencies at Clonegal and Newtownlennan. In 1799 he became Dean of Clogher; and was raised to the episcopate as Bishop of Cork and Ross in 1805. He was translated becoming Bishop of Raphoe two years later and was appointed 90th Bishop of Clogher in 1819. Reverend John de la Poer Beresford, 4th Marquess of Waterford (27 April 1814 – 6 November 1866) was an Irish peer and Church of Ireland minister. Beresford was the third son of the Henry Beresford, 2nd Marquess of Waterford and his wife, Susanna. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He later entered the ministry and was the incumbent of Mullaghbrack, County Armagh and a Prebendary of St Patrick's Cathedral, serving under his uncle, Lord John. On 20 February 1843, he married Christiana Leslie, daughter of Charles Powell Leslie II. John Henry de la Poer Beresford, 5th Marquess of Waterford (21 May 184423 October 1895), styled Earl of Tyrone from 1859 to 1866, was an Irish peer and Conservative politician. He served as Master of the Buckhounds under Lord Salisbury from 1885 to 1886. Background Lord Waterford was the eldest son of John Beresford, 4th Marquess of Waterford, by his wife Christiana Leslie. He was the elder brother of Lord Charles Beresford, Lord William Beresford and Lord Marcus Beresford. Political career Lord Waterford was returned to Parliament for County Waterford in 1865, a seat he held until the following year, when he succeeded his father in the marquessate and took his seat in the House of Lords. John Graham Hope Horsley de la Poer Beresford, 5th Baron Decies PC (5 December 1866 – 31 January 1944), styled The Honourable John Beresford until 1910, was an Anglo-Irish army officer, civil servant, and polo player in the 1900 Summer Olympics. Early life Beresford was born on 5 December 1866 at Newcastle upon Tyne. He was the second son of William Horsley-Beresford, 3rd Baron Decies, by Catherine Anne Dent, daughter of Commander William Dent. He was educated at Eton before joining the army in 1887. Career Beresford joined the 7th Hussars as a Second lieutenant in February 1887, was promoted to Lieutenant on 10 April 1889, and to Captain on 7 October 1896. He saw military service mainly in Africa, first during the Second Matabele War in 1896 and later during the Second Boer War. John Hubert de la Poer Beresford, 8th Marquess of Waterford (14 July 1933 – 11 February 2015) was an Irish peer. He succeeded to the marquessate in 1934. He was educated at Eton, and later served as a lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards' Supplementary Reserve. Biography A highly skilled horseman, Lord Waterford rode the first of his many point-to-point winners while still at Eton, and he went on to become the youngest-ever member of the Irish Turf Club. From 1960 to 1985, he was captain of the All-Ireland Polo Club and its highest handicap player. For 12 years (1960–72) he was a member, at both medium and high-goal levels, of the Duke of Edinburgh's Windsor Park team, which won the British open championship for the Cowdray Park Gold Cup twice, and on another occasion the high-goal Warwickshire Cup. John Beresford (footballer)
John Beresford MBE (born 4 September 1966) is an English former professional footballer and sports television pundit. As a player, he was a left back who notably played in the Premier League with Newcastle United and Southampton. His time at St James' Park saw him win the Football League First Division title in 1992, as well as finishing runners-up in two Premier League seasons, as well as appearing in the 1998 FA Cup final. Initially coming through the Manchester City academy. he also spent time in the Football League with Barnsley, Portsmouth and Birmingham City, in Donegal, Republic of Ireland with Finn Harps, and with non-league sides Ossett Town, Alfreton Town and Halifax Town.
