Big Tom and The Mainliners were a Country and Irish showband from the Castleblayney area of County Monaghan, Ireland. Timeline 1966–1975 Originally named as "The Mighty Mainliners Showband", the band achieved fame after appearing on RTÉ Television's ''Showband Show'' broadcast on 21 May 1966 performing ''Gentle Mother'' which subsequently reached number 7 in the pop charts of Ireland. John Murdoch Beattie (28 May 1912 – 15 January 1992), generally known as Jack Beattie, was a Scottish professional association footballer who played as an inside forward. He played in the Scottish League for Aberdeen, and made more than 200 appearances in the English Football League representing Wolverhampton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham, Huddersfield Town and Grimsby Town before his career was brought to an end by the Second World War. John M. Beattie (born 9 April 1957) is a British rower who competed in the 1980 Summer Olympics and in the 1984 Summer Olympics. Rowing career In 1975, Beattie along with Ian McNuff, Robin Roberts and Martin Cross was a crew member of the Ealing High Schools coxless fours boat coached by their History Teacher David Tanner (later Sir David Tanner CBE) which won the silver medal at the World Junior Rowing Championships for Great Britain in Montreal behind East Germany and in front of West Germany. The following year he was part of the coxless four that finished 10th overall after a fourth-place finish in the B final at the 1977 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam. In 1978, along with McNuff, David Townsend and Martin Cross he was a member of the British coxless four boat (coached by Tanner) which won the bronze medal in the 1978 World Rowing Championships at Karipiro, New Zealand behind Russia and East Germany. John Carruthers Beattie
Sir John Carruthers Beattie (21 November 1866 – 10 June 1946) was the first principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town (1918–1937). Beattie was born in Waterbeck, Scotland. He graduated from Edinburgh University having studied at Munich, Vienna, Berlin and Glasgow. Soon afterwards he was appointed Professor of Applied Mathematics and Experimental Physics at South African College in Cape Town. He married Elizabeth Paton in 1898. They had two daughters and a son. Their son was killed while serving with the Royal Air Force in 1942. For his contributions to education in South Africa, he was knighted in 1920. He died in Cape Town. John Watt Beattie (15 August 1859 – 24 June 1930) was an Australian photographer. Beattie was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. He was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society of Tasmania in 1890. He was appointed Photographer to the Government of Tasmania on 21 December 1896. He did extensive photography around Tasmania, as well as in the Central Highlands and on the West Coast of Tasmania. He was employed by North Mount Lyell to photograph between Gormanston and Kelly Basin in the 1890s. Beattie travelled with lantern slide shows on various subjects – "A trip through Tasmania", "From Kelly's Basin to Gormanston", as well as " Port Arthur and Tasman Peninsula", the photographs frequently published posthumously in ''Walkabout'', and his images of places such as Port Arthur and the Isle of the Dead were used as postcards in the early twentieth century. William John Beattie (known as John Beattie) (born 1941/1942) is a Canadian Neo-Nazi who was the founder and former leader of the Canadian Nazi Party. The establishment of the Canadian Nazi Party, re-named the National Socialist Party in 1967, marked a re-emergence of organized neo-Nazi activity in Canada that had been dormant since the days of Adrian Arcand. The Canadian Nazi Party leader Beattie organized a number of rallies in Toronto in the mid-1960s, although few actual Canadian Nazi Party members attended, and none of the rallies resulted in much support for Beattie's cause.
