John Osborne Austin
John Osborne Austin (December 28, 1849 – October 27, 1918) was a genealogist who wrote and published several books, primarily on the families of Rhode Island. The work for which he is best known is the ''Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island'', published in 1887. Life Austin was the son of Samuel Austin and Elizabeth H. Osborne of Providence, Rhode Island. He was married in 1878 to Helen Augusta Whitaker, and in 1880 he and his wife, with their infant daughter, Rosamond, lived in Providence in the household of his wife's mother, Mrs. William Whitaker. It was during the late 1880s that Austin published his most important works, including the ''Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island'' in 1887, ''The Ancestry of Thirty three Rhode Islanders'' in 1889, and ''The Ancestral Dictionary'' in 1891. John Austin (3 March 1790 – 1 December 1859) was an English legal theorist, who posthumously influenced British and American law with an analytical approach to jurisprudence and a theory of legal positivism. Austin opposed traditional approaches of "natural law", arguing against any need for connections between law and morality. Human legal systems, he claimed, can and should be studied in an empirical, value-free way. Life and work Austin was born on 3 March 1790 at Creeting St Mary in today's district of Mid Suffolk, as the eldest son of a well-to-do miller. After spending five years in the army during the Napoleonic Wars, Austin turned to law, and spent seven unhappy years practising at the Chancery bar. In 1819, he married Sarah Taylor and became neighbours and close friends with Jeremy Bentham, James and John Stuart Mill. John Austin (17 April 1752 – 1830), was a Scottish inventor, known for inventing musical equipment, improvements to weaving machines, and a new system of stenography. Austin was a native of Craigton near Glasgow, where is father was gardener to John Baird Esq. He was an apprentice to William and Walter Tait in Glasgow, and became a guild brother on 18 January 1776. He published at Glasgow, in or about 1800, a system of ''Stenography which may be learned in an hour,'' on a single folio engraved sheet, price 2s. 6d. A note at the end announces the publication of a complete system by the same author, price one guinea, but this does not appear to have been issued. He was also the author of an elaborate work entitled ''A System of Stenographic Music, invented by J. Austin, Glasgow. John Austin (highwayman)
John Austin (died 7 November 1783) was an English footpad who became the last person to be hanged at the Tyburn gallows outside London. He was sentenced to death for the murder of a labourer called John Spicer from Kent. The Recorder of London, James Adair, described it as a "robbery with violence" that involved "cutting and wounding ..in a cruel manner." This hanging would mark the end of Tyburn, a village then in the county of Middlesex, being a place of executions for almost 600 years. Austin was brought from Newgate prison in the City of London by cart to the gallows. The 2 mile journey along Tyburn Road would have taken up to three hours. Standing shackled in the cart, he would have been accompanied by two guards and a chaplain. John W. Austin (born August 31, 1944) is a retired American basketball player. Born in Washington, D.C., Austin played at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, then collegiately for Boston College, the first African American basketball player in Boston College's history. During a 107–92 victory over Georgetown at the Roberts Center in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, on February 21, 1964, Austin made history by scoring 49 points, setting a Boston College single-game record scoring record as well as the record for points scored against Georgetown by an opponent in a single game. Both records still stood as of 2018. The Boston Celtics selected Austin in the fourth round (38th pick overall) of the 1966 NBA draft. He played for the Baltimore Bullets in the National Basketball Association for four games in 1966 and the New Jersey Americans in the American Basketball Association for 41 games in 1967–1968.
