picture info	John Austen (illustrator) John Archibald Austen (Dover, (Kent), 5 January 1886 – Hythe, Kent, 27 October 1948) was a British book illustrator. He moved to London in 1906 where he studied art. His early works, including a fine Hamlet, were Beardsleyesque in style, but after 1925 he was influenced by the Art Deco movement. Books which he illustrated in this manner include Daphnis and Chloe and As You Like it. His work for ''Radio Times'' includes the cover of the Easter 1934 edition. Austen used several techniques in his illustrations, including wood-engraving and scraperboard, and changed styles to suit the text he was illustrating. He was also involved in advertising, producing adverts, several posters & numerous dustwrapper designs. He was a friend of Alan Odle and Harry Clarke and exhibited with them at the St George's Gallery in 1925. 	Sir John Austen, 2nd Baronet Sir John Austen, 2nd Baronet (c. 16401699) was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1667 and 1699. Austen was the son of Sir Robert Austen, 1st Baronet of Hall Place, Bexley and his wife Anne Muns, daughter of Thomas Muns, of Otteridge in Bersted, Kent, and of London. He was admitted to Gray's Inn on 23 Oct. 1657. He succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father on 30 October 1666. He had acquired the estate of Stagenhoe, Hertfordshire though his marriage as well as inheriting Hall Place, Bexley. In 1667, he was elected Member of Parliament for Rye in a by-election to the Cavalier Parliament. He was elected MP for Rye again in 1689, 1690, 1695 and 1698. He was one of the Commissioners of the Customs from 1697 to 1698. He had two brothers, Robert Austen of Tenterden, Kent and Edward Austen of Middle Temple, London. 	Sir John Austen, 1st Baronet Sir John Austen, 1st Baronet (after 1673 – 22 March 1742), of Derehams, South Mimms, and Highgate, Middlesex. was a British landowner and Whig politician who sat in the English and British House of Commons between 1701 and 1727. Austen was the son of Thomas Austen, of South Mimms and Hoxton, by Arabella Forset, the daughter and heir of Edward Forset, of Ashford and Tyburn.
