John A. Rowland
John A. Rowland, commonly known in Spanish as Don Juan Rowland, was a settler and ranchero in the San Gabriel Valley of California. Born in Maryland, Rowland travelled across the eastern United States before immigrating to the Mexican territory of Santa Fe de Nuevo México, where he naturalized as a Mexican citizen and married his first wife María Encarnación Martínez. He eventually made his way to Alta California, where he became a prominent landowner. Rowland Heights, California is named for him. Early life There is speculation about several aspects of the early life of John Albert Rowland (April 15, 1791–October 13, 1873) starting with his birthplace depending on which reference is accepted as either Cecil County, Maryland or Pennsylvania. City of Industry is a city in the San Gabriel Valley, in eastern Los Angeles County, California, United States. The Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum is a historic house museum located at 15415 East Don Julian Road in City of Industry, California, that features the homes and private cemetery that belonged to the pioneer Workman-Temple family. Workman House After his arrival in the San Gabriel Valley in 1841, William Workman (1799–1876) bought part of the Rancho La Puente and built his adobe house in 1842. It was enlarged over the years and, by 1870, was remodeled with the addition of brick wings and a second story, as well as impressive exterior decorative details. Toluca Lake is an affluent neighborhood in the city of Los Angeles, California, located in the San Fernando Valley northwest of downtown. The name is also given to a private natural lake fed by wells and maintained by neighboring property owners. Rancho Santa Ana del Chino was a Mexican land grant in the Chino Hills and southwestern Pomona Valley, in present-day San Bernardino County, California. Rancho Cañón de Santa Ana was a land grant in present-day Orange County, California given by Mexican governor José Figueroa in 1834 to Bernardo Yorba. The name means "Canyon of Santa Ana". The grant included present-day Yorba Linda. History Bernardo Yorba (1800–1858) was the son of José Antonio Yorba, the grantee of Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana.
