John A. MacIsaac
John A. MacIsaac (August 1883 – June 1, 1942) was a Canadian politician. He represented the Electoral district (Canada), electoral district of Antigonish (provincial electoral district), Antigonish in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1941 to 1942. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. MacIsaac was born in 1883 at Broad Cove Banks, Inverness County, Nova Scotia. He married Mary Catherine MacDonald in 1916. MacIsaac entered provincial politics in the 1941 Nova Scotia general election, 1941 election, winning the Antigonish riding by over 1000 votes. MacIsaac died in office on June 1, 1942. The Nova Scotia House of Assembly (french: Assemblée législative de la Nouvelle-Écosse; gd, Taigh Seanaidh Alba Nuadh), or Legislative Assembly, is the deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Nova Scotia of the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. Antigonish (provincial Electoral District)
Antigonish is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. It has existed since 1867 and is one of only four Nova Scotian districts that has existed continuously since Canadian Confederation. The district includes the community of Antigonish and the surrounding Antigonish County. It is bordered by Pictou East to the west, Guysborough-Sheet Harbour to its south, the Strait of Canso to the east, and the Northumberland Strait to the north. John Lasarus Williams (29 October 1924 – 15 June 2004), known as John L, was a Welsh nationalist activist. Williams was born in Llangoed on Anglesey, but lived most of his life in nearby Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. In his youth, he was a keen footballer, and he also worked as a teacher. His activism started when he campaigned against the refusal of Brewer Spinks, an employer in Blaenau Ffestiniog, to permit his staff to speak Welsh. John Patrick Gorman
John Patrick Gorman (August 8, 1876 – July 3, 1963) was a Canadian politician. He represented the Electoral district (Canada), electoral district of Antigonish (provincial electoral district), Antigonish in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1942 to 1949. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. Born in 1876 at East Tracadie, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, Gorman was a commercial traveler. He was educated at La Salle Academy, Halifax. Gorman married Margaret MacKinnon in 1907. Gorman entered provincial politics in 1942, winning a byelection in the Antigonish riding following the death of John A. MacIsaac. Gorman was re-elected in the 1945 Nova Scotia general election, 1945 election. He did not reoffer in the 1949 Nova Scotia general election, 1949 election. Gorman died at Antigonish on July 3, 1963. The Nova Scotia Liberal Party is a centrist provincial political party in Nova Scotia, Canada and the provincial section of the Liberal Party of Canada. The party currently forms the Official Opposition in Nova Scotia, under the leadership of Zach Churchill. The party was in power most recently from the 2013 election until the 2021 election. Origins The party is descended from the pre-Confederation Reformers in Nova Scotia who coalesced around Joseph Howe demanding the institution of responsible government. The Liberals (Reformers) formed several governments in the colony between 1848 and 1867. Inverness County is an historical county and census division of Nova Scotia, Canada. Local government is provided by the Municipality of the County of Inverness, the town of Port Hawkesbury and the Whycocomagh 2 Waycobah First Nation reserve. History Established as the County of Juste au Corps in 1835, Inverness County was given its present name in 1837. It was named after Sir Cameron Inverness of Scotland, the land from which many of the early settlers came. Agriculture and fishing dominated the economy with exports of butter and cattle to Newfoundland and Halifax for most of the nineteenth century. The construction of the Inverness and Richmond Railway in 1901, and the subsequent opening of coal mines at Port Hood, Mabou, and Inverness, created the "only home market" local farmers had ever had. A nova (plural novae or novas) is a transient astronomical event that causes the sudden appearance of a bright, apparently "new" star (hence the name "nova", which is Latin for "new") that slowly fades over weeks or months.
