Johannes Stricker
Johannes Paulus Stricker (18 October 1816 – 27 August 1886) was a Dutch theologian and biblical scholar. He attended the University of Leiden where he worked with J. F. van Oordt, a key figure in the new Groningen theology. He sat his ordination examination in May 1841, and was appointed to a ministerial post in October of that year. In December of that year, he married Willemina Carbentus, an older sister of Vincent van Gogh's mother. As an uncle he tutored the young Vincent in theology and biblical criticism in 1877–78. In the summer of 1881, van Gogh became infatuated with Strickers daughter Kee. He proposed marriage, but was rebuffed with an adamant "no, nay, never" ("nooit, neen, nimmer"). Johan Frederik Van Oordt
Johan Frederik van Oordt; name sometimes spelled as Joan Frederik van Oordt (23 November 1794 – 11 December 1852) was a Dutch theologian born in Rotterdam. In 1821 he earned his doctorate at University of Utrecht, where one of his instructors was Philip Willem van Heusde (1778-1839). While still a student he served as pastor in Lower Langbroek. Following graduation he served as a minister in Alkmaar, and in 1823 returned to Utrecht, where he worked as a minister and teacher. In 1829 van Oordt was appointed professor of theology at the University of Groningen, where he conducted classes in dogmatics, practical theology, homiletics, et al. With Louis Gerlach Pareau (1800-1866) and Petrus Hofstede de Groot (1802-1886), he formed the nucleus of an influential theological movement known as the Groningen School. Groningen Theology
The Groningen Theology was a theological movement in the Dutch Reformed Church of the mid-nineteenth century that sought a middle way between theological rationalism and orthodox Calvinism. The innovators of the Groningen theology— Petrus Hofstede de Groot (1802-1886), Johan Frederik van Oordt (1794-1852), and Louis Gerlach Pareau (1800-1866)—were professors at the Royal University of Groningen who met weekly with friends and pastors starting in 1835 to study the New Testament. Professor Willem Muurling (1805-1882) joined the society after Van Oordt accepted a chair at Leiden in 1839. The Groningen theologians attracted national attention above all through their journal, ''Waarheid in Liefde'' (Truth in Love), which ran from 1837 to 1872. Infatuate
Infatuation or being smitten is the state of being carried away by an unreasoned passion, usually towards another person for whom one has developed strong romantic feelings. Psychologist Frank D. Cox says that infatuation can be distinguished from romantic love only when looking back on a particular case of being attracted to a person. Infatuation may also develop into a mature love.
