Johannes Munnicks
Johannes Munnicks or ''Jean Munniks, Munnix, Munnicx, Munnigk, Munick, Jan Munnickius'' (16 October 1652 – 10 June 1711) was a Dutch Golden Age medical doctor and writer from the Northern Netherlands. Biography Munnicks was born in Utrecht. He was the son of a pharmacist who attended the University of Utrecht and who later became a rector there. On 13 December 1670 he graduated with the thesis ''de Fluore muliebri'' under Isbrand van Diemerbroeck and became Doctor of Medicine. He wrote ''Tractatus de urinus, earumque inspectione'' (Utrecht 1674, Dutch: ''Verhandelinge der wateren, en hoe men dezelve bezien moet von D. van Haagstraten'', Dordrecht 1683). In 1677 he wrote ''De utilitate anatomiae'' and became Lector of Anatomy in Utrecht. In 1678 he became professor of ''Chirurgie'' or Surgical Anatomy. He became city physician of Utrecht. Ernst Julius Gurlt
Ernst Julius Gurlt (13 September 1825 - 9 January 1899) was a German surgeon born in Berlin. He was the son of veterinarian Ernst Friedrich Gurlt (1794–1882). He studied medicine in Berlin, where he later became an assistant to Bernhard von Langenbeck. In 1853 he received his habilitation for surgery, becoming an associate professor in 1862 at the University of Berlin. He gained battle-related surgical experience during the First Schleswig War (1848), Second Schleswig War (1864), Austro-Prussian War (1866) and the Franco-Prussian War (1870/71). Gurlt specialized in the treatment and research of bone and joint injuries. He is remembered for studies conducted in the field of medical statistics. Nieuw Nederlandsch Biografisch Woordenboek
The ''Nieuw Nederlandsch Biografisch Woordenboek'' (''NNBW'') is a biographical reference work in the Dutch language. It has been succeeded by the ''Biografisch Woordenboek van Nederland''. It was published in ten parts between 1911 and 1937 by Sijthoff, Leiden, and the editors were and P. J. Blok. The lexicon contains more than 22,000 short biographies on important or at least notable Dutch people. No persons born after 1910 were included. The ''NNBW'' was compiled by several hundred historians and other experts. Since then it has been considered one of the most important reference works for Dutch history. It has been digitalised through a collaboration between the Digital Library for Dutch Literature (dbnl) and the Institution for Dutch History (ING), and both organisations have made the ''NNBW'' fully available to everyone on their respective sites. Petrus Johannes Blok
Petrus Johannes Blok (10 January 1855, in Den Helder – 24 October 1929, in Leiden) was a Dutch historian. Biography Born in Den Helder, Blok studied at the Latin School of Alkmaar and read classics at Leiden University, receiving his doctorate for a study of Sextus Pompeius. After this, he got a position at the Leiden Latin School, and published two books on the city's Medieval and Burgundian history. In 1884, he was made professor of Dutch History at the University of Groningen, where he supervised the publication of a series of historical documents from the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe. He was in the habit of traveling much to search for written documents, which brought him as far as Rome: a very long trip back then. Among his students was Pieter Jelles Troelstra. Philipp Christiaan Molhuysen
Philipp Christiaan Molhuysen (Almelo, 20 August' 1870 – The Hague, 15 July 1944) was a Dutch librarian, historian, biographer, and editor of a leading biographical dictionary, the Nieuw Nederlandsch Biografisch Woordenboek. He was librarian of the Peace Palace, and later of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek. In the latter capacity he was influential in organizing a national and international network of libraries and their interlibrary loan operations. He also stimulated the development of Dutch public libraries. August Hirsch (4 October 1817, Danzig – 28 January 1894, Berlin) was a German physician and medical historian. Biography He practiced in Danzig after studying at Berlin and Leipzig. In recognition of his studies on malarial fever and his work, ''Handbuch der historisch-geographischen Pathologie'', he was in 1863 made professor at Berlin. In 1873, he was a member of the German Cholera Commission, studied the conditions of Posen and West Prussia, and published a report (1874). He studied the plague in Astrakhan in 1879 and 1880, and in the latter year wrote a report to his Government. Johann Friedrich Gleditsch (15 August 1653 – 26 March 1716) was a major book publisher in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Early career Gleditsch was born in Eschendorf, near Pirna, on 15 August 1653, son of pastor Georg Gleditsch (1615–65) and his wife Catherine (née Nikolai, 1624–1671). After his father died when he was young, he attended the Thomas School in Leipzig. For financial reasons, he began to work for Elert Schumacher, a bookseller in Wittenberg, working as an assistant there until 1680. In 1681 he joined the publishing business of the late John Frederick Fritsch, whose widow Catarina Margaretha he married in November 1681. In the following years he developed the already prestigious company into a prominent scientific publisher, famous mainly for the publication in Leipzig of the Acta Eruditorum. Christian Gottlieb Jöcher (20 July 1694 – 10 May 1758) was a German academic, librarian and lexicographer. Jöcher was born in Leipzig, and became professor of history at the University of Leipzig in 1732. From 1742, he was university librarian in the Leipzig University Library, where he began the complete alphabetic catalogue of the collections.
