Johann Heinrich Merck Prize
Johann-Heinrich-Merck-Preis is a literary prize of Hesse awarded by the Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung since 1964. Since 2013 the prize winner receives €20,000. The award is donated by the Merck Group in memory of the German author and critic Johann Heinrich Merck (1741–1791). Deutsche Akademie Für Sprache Und Dichtung
The Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung (in English German Academy for Language and Literature) was founded on 28 August 1949, on the 200th birthday of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt. It is seated in Darmstadt, since 1971 in the Glückert House at the Darmstadt Artists' Colony. It is a society of writers and scholars on matters pertaining to German language and literature in the ''Deutsche sprachraum'', or Germanosphere. Karl Heinz Bohrer
Karl Heinz Bohrer (26 September 1932 – 4 August 2021) was a German literary scholar and essayist. He worked as chief editor for literature of the daily ''Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, FAZ'', and became co-publisher and author of the cultural magazine ''Merkur (magazine), Merkur''. He taught at the Bielefeld University for decades, and also at Stanford University, California. His autobiography appeared in two volumes in 2012 and 2017. Bohrer is regarded as a disputative intellectual thinker and critic, reflecting his time. He received notable awards for criticism, German language and literature, including the Johann Heinrich Merck Prize and the Heinrich Mann Prize. For his extensive work, Bohrer was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit with Ribbon (2014). Peter Von Matt
Peter von Matt (born 20 May 1937) is a Swiss philologist and author. Life Born in Lucerne, Peter von Matt grew up in Stans in the canton of Nidwalden. He studied Art History as well as German and English studies in Zurich and received a doctorate with Emil Staiger on Franz Grillparzer. In 1970, he received his post doctorate lecturing qualifications with a work on E. T. A. Hoffmann. From 1976 to 2002, von Matt taught at the University of Zurich as a Professor of Newer German Literature. He was a guest professor at Stanford University in 1980 and a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study, Berlin in 1992/93. Von Matt is a member of the Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and the Sächsische Akademie der Künste (Saxon Academy of the Arts). Walter Boehlich
Walter Boehlich (16 September 1921 – 6 April 2006) was a German journalist, literary critic, literary editor and translator. Life Walter Boehlich was born in Breslau, Silesia, as a son of writer Ernst Boehlich. During the Nazi regime, Boelich was discriminated at school because of his Jewish background. After World War II, he read philology at the University of Bonn and became the assistant of Prof. Ernst Robert Curtius, an expert on Romance studies and literary theory. He worked as literary critic for the weekly newspaper Die Zeit and for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. As chief editor at Suhrkamp Verlag, he played a crucial part in making Suhrkamp a leading publishing house of German post-war literature and theory. Lothar Baier
Lothar Baier (16 May 1942 – 11 July 2004) was a German author, publisher, translator and co-founder of the Literary periodical Text+Kritik. Baier was born in Karlsruhe. He was accepted as one of the most profound German thinkers of the Francophone World and was recognized with the 1982 Jean Améry Prize for Essayists and with the 2003 Gerrit Engelke Prize. Baier published amongst others in the ''Merkur'', in the ''Kursbuch'' and in the Deutschlandfunk and was for many years the editor of the Die Wochenzeitung (WOZ) in Zürich. Ivan Nagel
Ivan Nagel (28 June 1931 – 9 April 2012) was a German theater scholar, critic and former theater director of Hungarian origin. Life Ivan Nagel was born in Budapest. He came from a Jewish family who fled their home because of the Second World War, and therefore survived the Holocaust. After the war, Nagel wanted to study in Budapest. This was refused to him by the communist rulers since he was a bourgeois. He fled to Switzerland in 1948. In the 1950s Nagel lived and studied as a refugee first in Paris and Zürich then in Frankfurt am Main. In Frankfurt he studied philosophy under Theodor W. Adorno who later helped him to avoid a threatening deportation (as an "undesirable asylum seeker"). After his studies, he worked as a theater critic in Munich and became the chief drama director of the Munich Kammerspiele. Erwin Chargaff (11 August 1905 – 20 June 2002) was an Austro-Hungarian-born American biochemist, writer, Bucovinian Jew who emigrated to the United States during the Nazi Germany, Nazi era, and professor of biochemistry at Columbia University medical school. He wrote a well-reviewed autobiography, ''Heraclitean Fire: Sketches from a Life Before Nature''. Albrecht Schöne
Albrecht Schöne (born 17 July 1925) is a German Germanist. From 1960 to 1990 he was a professor of German philology at the University of Göttingen. Career Schöne was born on 17 July 1925 in Barby an der Elbe. After graduating from secondary school he immediately performed his military service. During World War II he was made prisoner of war. Schöne subsequently worked as a lumberjack until 1947. From 1947 to 1951 he studied German literature, history, philosophy, theology and psychiatry at the universities of Freiburg, Basel, Göttingen and Münster.
