Johann Caspar Bosshardt
Johann Caspar Bosshardt, or Kaspar Boßhardt (1 April 1823, Pfäffikon, Zürich, Pfäffikon - 10 February 1887, Munich) was a Swiss history painter who spent most of his life in Germany. Biography His father was a Cooper (profession), cooper. Despite objections from his parents, he was finally allowed, at the age of fifteen, to go to Zürich, where he was apprenticed to the engraver, Georg Christoph Friedrich Oberkogler (1774–1855). Later, he studied portrait painting with Johann Rudolf Obrist (1809–1868). He then obtained the sponsorship of Ludwig Vogel who, in 1841, recommended him to Theodor Hildebrandt for his classes at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. There, he came under the influence of Hildebrandt, Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow and Carl Friedrich Lessing. Sonderbund War
The Sonderbund War (german: Sonderbundskrieg, fr , Guerre du Sonderbund, it , Guerra del Sonderbund) of November 1847 was a civil war in Switzerland, then still a relatively loose confederacy of cantons. It ensued after seven Catholic cantons formed the ("separate alliance") in 1845 to protect their interests against a centralization of power. The war concluded with the defeat of the Sonderbund. It resulted in the emergence of Switzerland as a federal state, concluding the period of political "restoration and regeneration" in Switzerland. The Sonderbund consisted of the cantons of Lucerne, Fribourg, Valais, Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden and Zug, all predominantly Catholic and governed by conservative administrations. The cantons of Ticino and Solothurn, also predominantly Catholic but governed by liberal administrations, did not join the alliance. Hyacinth Holland
Hyacinth Holland (16 August 1827 – 16 January 1918) was a German art and literature historian. Life Born in Munich, Holland was a son of the lawyer Christoph Holland and his wife Karoline Seel. In 1846 he passed the Abitur at the Wilhelmsgymnasium München. At the Universität of his hometown, Holland began to study Catholic theology, but later switched to law and medicine. He successfully completed his studies in art and literary history in 1853 at the University of Würzburg with a doctorate. In 1853, Holland also made his successful debut as a writer; he published the first volume of a ''History of German Literature'' (planned for three volumes, this work remained a fragment). Throughout his life, he earned his living as a freelance contributor to various newspapers and magazines. Hans Waldmann (mayor)
Hans Waldmann (1435 – 6 April 1489) was mayor of Zurich and a Swiss military leader. Born in Blickensdorf near Zug, he married well and became Squire of Dubelstein. He served as Mayor of Zurich between 1483-1489 and was beheaded on the 6 April 1489 following a peasant revolt. Life Early Years Born in the year 1435 in Blickensdorf near the Zug, Hans Waldmann grew up in economically favourable circumstances. Little is known about his father, who presumably died in 1436. His mother, née Katharina Schweiger, was the daughter of a salt merchant from Lucerne, who had already acquired the citizenship in Zurich in 1409, and inherited his significant fortune. It can hardly have been the financial pressure, but rather the choice of the parents that sent Waldmann to a tailor's apprenticeship before a second attempt at a tanner.
