Wolfgang Kasack
Wolfgang Kasack (russian: Вольфганг Германович Казак, ''Volfgang Germanovich Kazak''; Potsdam, 20 January 1927 – Much, 10 January 2003) was a German Slavic studies scholar and translator. After his death, his academic estate was donated to the University of Mainz. He was son of the German writer Hermann Kasack. Annemarie Schimmel
Annemarie Schimmel (7 April 1922 – 26 January 2003) was an influential German Orientalist and scholar who wrote extensively on Islam, especially Sufism. She was a professor at Harvard University from 1967 to 1992. Early life and education Schimmel was born to Protestant and highly cultured middle-class parents in Erfurt, Germany. Her father Paul was a postal worker and her mother Anna belonged to a family with connections to seafaring and international trade. Schimmel remembered her father as "a wonderful playmate, full of fun," and she recalled that her mother made her feel that she was the child of her dreams. She also remembered her childhood home as being full of poetry and literature, though her family was not an academic one. Having finished high school at age 15, she worked voluntarily for half a year in the Reichsarbeitsdienst (Reich Labor Service). Curt Meyer-Clason
Curt Meyer-Clason (19 September 1910 – 13 January 2012) was a German writer and translator. Biography Meyer-Clason was born in Ludwigsburg in September 1910. After graduating from high school, Meyer-Clason worked as a commercial clerk in Bremen and from 1936 as an independent businessman in Argentina and Brazil. From 1942 to 1944, he was interned in Brazil as an illegal alien. In 1955 he went back to Germany and worked as a freelance book editor in Munich. From the sixties, his work concentrated on working on translations of Portuguese, Spanish and Latin American books – notably numerous books by Gabriel Garcia Marquez including '' One Hundred Years of Solitude''. From 1969 to 1976 Meyer-Clason acted as head of the Goethe Institute in Lisbon. Peter Urban (16 July 1941 in Berlin – 9 December 2013) was a German writer and translator. Biography He studied History, German studies and Slavic studies at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg and the University of Belgrade. He became famous for his translations of Russian authors, including Isaak Babel, Anton Chekhov, Daniel Charms, Leonid Dobychin, Ivan Goncharov, Nikolai Gogol, Alexander Pushkin, and Ivan Turgenev.
