The Instituto de Tecnologia Intuitiva e Bioarquitetura (English: Institute of Intuitive Technology and Bio-Architecture), or TIBÁ, is an eco-centre located in the coastal jungle of Brazil (Mata Atlântica), dedicated to demonstrating and teaching sustainable development and "barefoot" construction techniques. It was founded in 1987 by Rose and Johan van Lengen, author of the grassroots construction manual, ''The Barefoot Architect''. The book has gained worldwide popularity with its advocacy of, and detailed instruction on, appropriate technology and natural building techniques for builders, architects, and students. The name ''TIBÁ'' comes from a Tupi language ( Brazilian Amazonian tribe) expression meaning "a place where many people meet". History Johan van Lengen was born in Amsterdam in 1930. Biological Filter
A trickling filter is a type of wastewater treatment system. It consists of a fixed bed of rocks, coke, gravel, slag, polyurethane foam, sphagnum peat moss, ceramic, or plastic media over which sewage or other wastewater flows downward and causes a layer of microbial slime (biofilm) to grow, covering the bed of media. Aerobic conditions are maintained by splashing, diffusion, and either by forced-air flowing through the bed or natural convection of air if the filter medium is porous. Natural Building
A natural building involves a range of building systems and materials that place major emphasis on sustainability. Ways of achieving sustainability through natural building focus on durability and the use of minimally processed, plentiful or renewable resources, as well as those that, while recycled or salvaged, produce healthy living environments and maintain indoor air quality. Appropriate Technology
Appropriate technology is a movement (and its manifestations) encompassing technological choice and application that is small-scale, affordable by locals, decentralized, labor-intensive, energy-efficient, environmentally sustainable, and locally autonomous. It was originally articulated as intermediate technology by the economist Ernst Friedrich "Fritz" Schumacher in his work ''Small Is Beautiful.'' Both Schumacher and many modern-day proponents of appropriate technology also emphasize the technology as people-centered. Permaculture is an approach to land management and settlement design that adopts arrangements observed in flourishing natural ecosystems. It includes a set of design principles derived using whole-systems thinking. It applies these principles in fields such as regenerative agriculture, town planning, rewilding, and community resilience. Ernst Götsch
Ernst Götsch (born 1948) is a Swiss farmer and researcher working mostly in Brazil. He has advocated for an ancient system of climate and biodiversity-friendly sustainable farming techniques known as syntropic agriculture. Biography Götsch was born in 1948 in Raperswilen, Switzerland and moved to Brazil in the early 1980s, establishing himself in a farm in Southern Bahia. Years before, he had decided to quit a research job on genetic enhancement at FAP Zürich-Reckenholz. Agroforestry is a land use management system in which trees or shrubs are grown around or among crops or pastureland. Trees produce a wide range of useful and marketable products from fruits/nuts, medicines, wood products, etc. This intentional combination of agriculture and forestry has multiple benefits, such as greatly enhanced yields from staple food crops, enhanced farmer livelihoods from income generation, increased biodiversity, improved soil structure and health, reduced erosion, and carbon sequestration. Green School (Bali)
Green School Bali is a private and international pre-kindergarten to high school located along the Ayung River near Abiansemal, Badung Regency, Bali, Indonesia. The school was founded by John A Hardy, John and Cynthia Hardy. The Hardys reportedly conceived of Green School in 2006 after reading Alan Wagstaff's Three Springs concept document for an educational village community. The school's bamboo bridge, spanning 22 meters across the Ayung River, was completed in November 2006. Superadobe is a form of earthbag construction that was developed by Iranian architect Nader Khalili.
