Johan Enschedé Hof
The Johan Enschedé Hof is a hofje in Haarlem, Netherlands, on the Korte Begijnestraat. Via a rear entrance it is linked to the Hofje van Bakenes. Building It was designed and built in 2007 by Joost Swarte and Henk Döll who also collaborated on the Haarlem theater, the Toneelschuur, located around the corner. It was named after Johannes Enschedé III, the man under whom the printing company of the same name grew to be located on this spot. This hofje is managed by the same regents that manage the Hofje van Bakenes, which can be reached through the rear entrance. {{inline refs needed, date=May 2012 A hofje (diminutive of 'hof', 'court') is a Dutch word for a courtyard with almshouses around it. Hofjes have existed since the Middle Ages. A hofje provided housing for elderly people (mostly women). They were privately funded, and served as a form of social security. In the Netherlands there are still a number of hofjes in use. Hofjes are usually built in a U-shape with a yard or garden in the middle, and a gate as entrance. The shape of hofjes was most likely inspired by the (older) Begijnenhofjes—groups of small houses inhabited exclusively by religious women. A distinction is usually made between the Begijnenhofjes and 'regular' hofjes. The former were used only by (Catholic) women, who were supporting themselves. They were a kind of cloister. Hofje Van Bakenes
The Hofje van Bakenes or Bakenesserkamer is a hofje in Haarlem, Netherlands, located between the Bakenessergracht and the Wijde Appelaarsteeg. In the Middle Ages "kamer" or "room" meant house. Usually the houses within a hofje consisted of just one room. History of the foundation The hofje was founded from the legacy of Dirck van Bakenes (or Dirc van Bakenesse) in 1395. This makes it the oldest hofje in the Netherlands. The earliest mention of it in town records is from the History of Haarlem by Samuel Ampzing in 1628, who claims to have copied the ''stichtingsbrief'' or letter of foundation (since lost). Joost Swarte (born 24 December 1947 in Heemstede) is a Dutch cartoonist and graphic designer. He is best known for his ligne claire or ''clear line'' style of drawing, a term he coined. Comic series and characters by Swarte include ''Katoen en Pinbal'', ''Jopo de Pojo'', ''Anton Makassar'', ''Dr Ben Cine'' and ''Niet Zo, Maar Zo''- ''Passi, Messa''. De Toneelschuur is a theater in Haarlem, Netherlands. The building has two theaters and two movie theaters. In the latter more alternative movies are shown (no Hollywood blockbusters). The name Filmschuur is often used to indicate the movie theaters. From 1998 to 2003 the current building of the theater at the Lange Begijnestraat 9 was renovated as part of the Appelaar plan. Joost () was an Internet TV service, created by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis (founders of Skype and Kazaa).
