Johan Carl Krauss
Johan Carl Krauss (6 October 1759 in Öhringen – 19 March 1826 in Leiden), was a German-born professor of medicine at Leiden, botanist, taxonomist and author of botanical books. He was the son of Christophorus Adam Krauss, a physician at the court of Prince Hohenlohe, and Dorothea Zolner. He is best known for his publication ''"Afbeeldingen der fraaiste, meest uitheemsche boomen en heesters"''. After initial tuition by his father, Johan served for a period as soldier and later resumed his studies at Erlangen and Straatsburg, and upon completing these was appointed as physician to the Baden troops, who were stationed in Holland at the time. Accordingly, he found himself in Harderwijk where in 1795 he graduated at the University of Harderwijk with his thesis 'De praecipuis militum morbis eorumque causis' (On the chief military diseases and their causes). Johannes Zorn
Johannes Zorn (1739 in Kempten – 1799) was a German pharmacist, botanist and botanical illustrator. After his studies in pharmacy, Zorn became an apothecary in his hometown. He made extensive trips across Europe to collect medicinal plants, and between 1779 and 1790 published 6 volumes of "''Icones plantarum medicinalium''" in Nuremberg in which he illustrated and described over 600 medicinal plants. Later in 1796 this was published as the six-volum"''Afbeeldingen der Artseny-Gewassen met Derzelver Nederduitsche en Latynsche Beschryvingen''"in Amsterdam by J. C. Sepp & Zoon. It was illustrated by 600 handcoloured engraved plates, the Dutch text being from Martinus Houttuyn`s "''Natuurlijke Historie''". A rare 1813 supplement by Adolphus Ypey also contains 100 plates. Adolphus Ypey or Adolphus Ypeus or Adolf Ypey (4 June 1749, Franeker - 27 February 1822, Leiden), was a Dutch botanist and Doctor of Philosophy and Medicine who graduated at the University of Franeker and stayed on to lecture in botany. He later lectured in Medicine at the University of Leyden. He was the son of professor Nicolaas Ypey. His graduate dissertation was entitled ''Dissertatio philosophica inauguralis de igne'' with academic advisor Jan Hendrik van Swinden. Maarten Houttuyn or Houttuijn (1720 – 2 May 1798) Latinised as Martinus Houttuyn, was a Dutch naturalist. Houttuyn was born in Hoorn, studied medicine in Leiden and moved to Amsterdam in 1753. He published many books on natural history, e.g. ''Natuurlyke Historie of uitvoerige Beschryving der Dieren, Planten en Mineraalen, volgens het Samenstel van den Heer Linnaeus'', in 37 volumes (1761-1773), following Carl Linnaeus' division into the animal kingdom, the plant kingdom, and the mineral kingdom. His areas of interest encompassed Pteridophytes, Bryophytes and Spermatophytes. He died in Amsterdam. Sepp Family (publishing)
Four generations of the Sepp family, publishers and artists were naturalists or entomologists. The Sepp company became famous for the numerous large natural history collections of plates that appeared between 1768 and 1860. They published translations from English, French and German authors on natural history, prints by Petrus Camper, an anatomist, but also some religious songs. Pieter Cramer and Caspar Stoll, also entomologists, had their works published by Sepp. Genealogy Christiaan Andreas Sepp In the first generation was Christiaan Andreas Sepp (c. 1710-2 August 1775), born in Goslar, the son of a conrector, who established himself shortly in Hamburg and Göttingen, but before 1739 in Amsterdam as an etcher and engraver of land and sea maps.
