The 2012 Hockey East Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was played between March 8 and March 17, 2012 at campus locations and at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. The Boston College Eagles won their eleventh Hockey East Tournament and earned the Hockey East's automatic bid into the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament. Format The tournament featured three rounds of play. The teams that finish below eighth in the conference are not eligible for tournament play. In the first round, the first and eighth seeds, the second and seventh seeds, the third seed and sixth seeds, and the fourth seed and fifth seeds played a best-of-three with the winner advancing to the semifinals. In the semifinals, the highest and lowest seeds and second highest and second lowest seeds play a single-elimination game, with the winner advancing to the championship game. Tsongas Arena
The Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell (formerly the Tsongas Arena) is a multi-purpose facility owned by the University of Massachusetts Lowell and located in Lowell, Massachusetts. The arena was opened on January 27, 1998, and dedicated to the memory of the late Paul Tsongas, prominent Lowell native and U.S. senator. The arena was built with $4 million in funding from both the city and the university, plus another $20 million contributed from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Mike Collins (born May 25, 1990) is an American professional ice hockey player who is currently an unrestricted free agent. He most recently played for ERC Ingolstadt in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). Playing career Collins played collegiate hockey with the Merrimack Warriors men's ice hockey, Merrimack Warriors in the NCAA Men's Division I Ice Hockey, NCAA Men's Division I Hockey East conference. In his Junior (education year), junior year, Collins' outstanding play was rewarded with a selection to the 2012-13 All-Hockey East First Team. Alfond Arena
Alfond Arena is a multi-purpose arena in Orono, Maine, United States. The arena opened in 1977. It is home to the University of Maine Black Bears ice hockey teams. It is recognizable for its distinctive hyperbolic paraboloid architecture. The multi-angular roof design can also be found at Pavilion at Villanova University, the Brown University Smith Swim Center and the Flynn Recreation Complex at Boston College. It is named for Harold Alfond, a longtime Maine booster, whose name also adorns Alfond Stadium, the school's main outdoor stadium. It was expanded in 1992 from its original capacity of 3,800 in order to accommodate more spectators and bring the basketball team back from its temporary home at the Bangor Auditorium. Wade Megan (born July 22, 1990) is an American former professional ice hockey center who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the St. Louis Blues and the Detroit Red Wings. Playing career Originally chosen by the Florida Panthers in the 2009 entry draft, Megan played collegiate hockey with Boston University in the Hockey East. Unable to secure a NHL contract with the Panthers, Megan signed his first professional deal with Florida's AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage to begin the 2013–14 season on September 20, 2013. After three-years within the Panthers AHL affiliates, Megan left as a free agent and secured his first NHL deal, on a one-year, two-way deal with the St. Louis Blues on July 2, 2016. Evan Rodrigues (born July 28, 1993) is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre/ winger for the Florida Panthers of the of the National Hockey League (NHL). He previously played for the Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins and Colorado Avalanche. Playing career Junior Rodrigues played two seasons for the Georgetown Raiders of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL). He scored 105 points (41 goals, 64 assists) in 94 contests during the two seasons, and led his team to the playoffs in both seasons to advance to the 2010–2011 league semifinals. Matt Nieto
Matthew Evan Nieto (born November 5, 1992) is an American professional ice hockey left winger for the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League (NHL). He previously played for the San Jose Sharks. He was drafted by the Sharks in the second round, 47th overall, of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Early life and career Nieto is of Mexican-American descent.
