Joevana Charles
Joevana Charles (July 1955 – 17 January 2021) was a member of the National Assembly of Seychelles. She was a member of the Seychelles People's Progressive Front, and was first elected to the Assembly in 1993. Early life and career Charles was born in July 1955 as the fifth of eight children. As both of her parents worked abroad, Charles took the role of caring and teaching his brothers and sisters as well as managing their education. His brother, Flavien Joubert, described her as a "party girl" who partied at various places in Seychelles clubs every Saturday before she was married. Charles started her career as a teacher. He later attended the National Teachers Training College and went for further study abroad at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. United Seychelles is a political party in Seychelles. It publishes a newspaper called ''The People''. It was known as the Seychelles People's Progressive Front (french: Front Progressiste du Peuple Seychellois) until June 2009, when it changed its name to the People's Party (Seychellois Creole: ''Parti Lepep'', PL). The party changed its name again in November 2018, from the People's Party to United Seychelles. The party was founded in 1964 by France-Albert René, under the name Seychelles People's United Party, and it was led by him from its inception. The SPUP was the ruling party from 1977 to 2020 and was the sole legal party in the country from 1979 to 1991 (this period is referred to retrospectively as the "Second Republic"). 1993 Seychellois General Election
General elections were held in the Seychelles between 20 and 23 July 1993 following the approval of a new constitution in a referendum on 18 June. They were the first-ever multi-party elections for President and the first multi-party election for the National Assembly since 1974. The Assembly was increased from 22 to 33 seats by the addition of 11 seats to be elected by proportional representation in addition to the 22 constituency seats. The ruling Seychelles People's Progressive Front, which had previously been the sole legal party, won both elections, taking 27 of the 33 seats in the National Assembly, whilst its leader, France-Albert René, won the presidential election. The other two parties to contest the election were the Seychelles Democratic Party, which won five seats, and the United Opposition, an alliance of the Seselwa Party, the Seychelles National Party and the National Alliance Party), which won one. General elections were held in the Seychelles between 20 and 22 March 1998. This article is about the demographic features of the population of Seychelles, including population density, ethnicity, education level, health of the populace, economic status, religious affiliations and other aspects of the population. About 90% of the Seychellois people live on the island of Mahé. Most of the rest live on Praslin and La Digue, with the remaining smaller islands either sparsely populated or uninhabited.
