Joel Smith House
The Joel Smith House is a historic house at the northeast corner of the junction of United States Route 167 and County Route 5 in rural Union County, Arkansas. Built , this two-story vernacular I-house was the home of Joel Smith, one of the first white settlers of Union County. The house is a rare surviving early example of a typical colonial-style house with matching shed-roof side porches. The property is also thought likely to yield archaeological finds useful in assessing and understanding frontier life in the area. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. El Dorado, Arkansas
El Dorado, founded by Matthew Rainey, is a city in, and the county seat of, Union County, on the southern border of Arkansas, United States. According to the 2010 census, the population of the city is 18,884. El Dorado is headquarters of the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission as well as Murphy USA, Deltic Timber Corporation and a DelekUS oil refinery. The city has a downtown arts district, the Murphy Arts District (MAD); a community college, South Arkansas Community College (SouthArk); and a multi-cultural arts center, South Arkansas Arts Center (SAAC). El Dorado is the population, cultural and business center of south central Arkansas. The city was the heart of the 1920s oil boom in the area. U.S. Route 167 runs for from Ash Flat, Arkansas at U.S. Route 62/US Route 412 to Abbeville, Louisiana at Louisiana Highway 14. It goes through the cities of Little Rock, Arkansas, Alexandria, Louisiana, and Lafayette, Louisiana. Some of the highway's route has been combined with or parallels Interstate 49 in Louisiana. Union County, Arkansas
Union County is a county located on the central southern border of the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 41,639. The county seat is El Dorado. The county was formed on November 2, 1829, and named in recognition of the citizens' petition for a new county, which said that they were petitioning "in the spirit of Union and Unity." The county is directly adjacent to the south to Union Parish in the state of Louisiana. The El Dorado, AR Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Union County. I-house
The I-house is a vernacular house type, popular in the United States from the colonial period onward. The I-house was so named in the 1930s by Fred Kniffen, a cultural geographer at Louisiana State University who was a specialist in folk architecture. He identified and analyzed the type in his 1936 study of Louisiana house types.
