Joel Smeenge
Joel Andrew Smeenge (born April 1, 1968) is a former American football defensive end in the National Football League (NFL) for the New Orleans Saints and the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was drafted by the Saints in the third round of the 1990 NFL Draft. He played 11 seasons in the NFL from 1990 to 2000. He played college football at Western Michigan University. Smeenge attended Hudsonville High School along with other notable Hudsonvillian, Major League Baseball's John Vander Wal. Herb Deromedi, head coach at Central Michigan, was quoted in saying, "in Joel you have one of the top defensive players we've ever seen in the Mid-American Conference. He ranks right up there with Jack Lambert and John Offerdahl." Quick, tough and hard hitting, Smeenge was one of the nation's most impressive defensive ends in 1989. Defensive End
Defensive end (DE) is a defensive position in the sport of gridiron football. This position has designated the players at each end of the defensive line, but changes in formation (American football), formations over the years have substantially changed how the position is played. History Early formations, with six- and seven-man line defense, seven-man lines, used the end as a containment player, whose job was first to prevent an "end run" around his position, then secondarily to force plays inside. Linebacker (LB) is a playing position in gridiron football. Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and line up three to five yards behind the line of scrimmage and the defensive linemen. They are the "middle ground" of defenders, playing closer to the line of scrimmage than the defensive backs (secondary), but farther back than the defensive linemen. As such, linebackers play a hybrid role and are often the most versatile players on the defensive side of the ball; they can be asked to play roles similar to either a defensive lineman (such as stopping the runner on a running play) or a defensive back (such as dropping back into pass coverage). John Offerdahl
John Arnold Offerdahl (born August 17, 1964) is a restaurateur and former professional American football player. An inside linebacker, he played college football at Western Michigan University, before being selected by the Miami Dolphins in 52nd pick of the 1986 draft. Offerdahl played his entire eight-year professional career with the Dolphins. While at WMU, Offerdahl set school records in tackles and recovered fumbles, making the All Mid-American Conference first-team his last three years, the Associated Press All American third-team his junior year, and the All American second-team his senior year. In his professional career, Offerdahl was selected for the Pro Bowl in each of his first five years in the league, and was a two-time All-Pro; in 1986 as a second-team selection and in 1990 as a first-team selection. Jack Lambert (American Football)
John Harold "Jack" Lambert (born July 8, 1952) is an American former professional football player who played as a middle linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). Recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990 as "the greatest linebacker of his era," Lambert was the starting middle linebacker for four Super Bowl-winning teams during an 11-year career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Mid-American Conference (MAC) is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I collegiate athletic conference with a membership base in the Great Lakes region that stretches from Western New York to Illinois.
