Joseph Watson (mayor)
Joseph Watson was an American merchant and politician. He was the mayor of Philadelphia from 1824 to 1828. Watson was known for his efforts to free free blacks who had been kidnapped in Philadelphia and transported to southern plantations as slaves and in pursuing members of Patty Cannon's gang of kidnappers. Biography Watson was born in 1784 in Bucks County to Isaac Watson, a carpenter, and Ann Jenks. Watson later became a lumber merchant in Philadelphia. In 1822, Watson was elected as an alderman on the Common Council. In 1824, Robert Wharton completed what would be the last of his 14 terms in office and Watson was elected by the council in a 25-0 vote. As mayor, Watson had the duty of organizing Philadelphia's reception for the Marquis de Lafayette on his tour of the United States. He was re-elected in 1825 and 1826. Joseph Watson, 1st Baron Manton (10 February 1873 – 13 March 1922) was an English industrialist from Leeds, Yorkshire. He was chairman of Joseph Watson & Sons Ltd, soap manufacturers of Leeds, and a director of the London and North-Western Railway, in the late 19th century the largest joint stock company in the world. He became in later life a pioneer of industrialised agriculture in England and a successful racehorse owner. He was step-great-grandfather to David Cameron, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Early life Watson was the only son of George Watson, soap manufacturer, of Donisthorpe House near Moor Allerton, Leeds, Yorkshire. He was educated at Repton School and Clare College, Cambridge. Joseph Watson (Seosamh) is emeritus professor of Modern Irish at University College Dublin, a Celtic Faculty chair which dates from the foundation of the National University He was Dean of Faculty 1995–2001. Professor Watson was head boy at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution during 1961-1962 from where he won an open scholarship in Classics to King's College, Cambridge. Joseph Watson (1 January 1952 – 30 September 2000) was an Australian footballer who played as a winger in a 24-year career extending from 1968 to 1992. Playing career A native of Fife, Joe Watson had been playing with Nottingham Forest since the age of 16, but began his professional career at 18 in 1970 with Dundee United, participating in a handful of games before joining Forfar Athletic in 1972. Joseph John Watson (born July 6, 1943) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played for the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, and Colorado Rockies during his National Hockey League (NHL) career. With the Flyers, he played with his younger brother Jimmy for several seasons, and was a member of the Flyers' back-to-back Stanley Cup championship teams. Joseph Watson Sidebotham (29 April 1857 – 10 June 1925) was a British colliery owner and Conservative politician. Life He was the eldest son of Joseph Sidebotham and Anne Coward of Bowdon, Cheshire. He was educated privately and at Owens College, before receiving a Bachelor of Music degree from Trinity College, Cambridge.
