Joe Stafford
Joseph Stafford (10 March 1918 – 17 June 2000) was a Gaelic footballer who played for the Cavan county team. Playing career Stafford played at right full forward and was a prolific goalscorer for Cavan in the 1940s. He is 9th in All-time top Ulster goalscorers chart. His goal was crucial in securing Cavan's famous victory in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final in Polo Grounds, New York in 1947. He helped Cavan retain the title the following year against Co. Mayo. Polo Grounds
The Polo Grounds was the name of three stadiums in Upper Manhattan, New York City, used mainly for professional baseball and American football from 1880 through 1963. The original Polo Grounds, opened in 1876 and demolished in 1889, was built for the sport of polo. Bound on the south and north by 110th and 112th streets and on the east and west by Fifth and Sixth (Lenox) avenues, just north of Central Park, it was converted to a baseball stadium when leased by the New York Metropolitans in 1880. The third Polo Grounds, built in 1890, was renovated after a fire in 1911 and became Polo Grounds IV, the one generally indicated when the ''Polo Grounds'' is referenced. Jimmy Stafford (Gaelic Footballer)
James J. Stafford (1943 – 16 March 2021) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played as a full-back for club side Killinkere and was a member of the Cavan senior football team at various times from 1962 until 1973. Career Stafford was born in Killinkere, County Cavan and was a nephew of All-Ireland-winner Joe Stafford. He learned a lot of his Gaelic football as a student at St. Patrick's College where he won back-to-back MacRory Cup titles. Stafford first appeared on the inter-county scene with the Cavan minor team in 1961, before winning an Ulster Junior Championship medal the following year. This success earned a call-up to the senior side which also claimed the provincial title. He claimed a second Ulster Senior Championship medal in 1964, however, emigration meant that he missed out on the successes of 1967 and 1969. The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) ( ga, Craobh Shinsir Peile na hÉireann) is the premier competition in Gaelic football. An annual tournament organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), it is contested by the county teams in All-Ireland. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands).
