Joe Smith (musician)
Joe "Fox" Smith ''(né'' Joseph Emory Smith; June 28, 1902 – December 2, 1937) was an American jazz trumpeter. Career Known throughout his childhood as "Toots", Smith originally started as a drummer but was convinced by Ethel Waters that he was far better as a trumpet player. It has been said that when he reached New York in 1920 he already had a fully formed style, which achieved "the vocalized sound, the blues spirit and the swing which makes for convincing jazz performance". In 1921, Smith joined the Black Swan Jazz Masters in Chicago, Illinois, directed at the time by Fletcher Henderson who described Smith as "the most soulful trumpet I ever had". He also worked with the Jazz Hounds, the Broadway Syncopators, and finally with McKinney's Cotton Pickers throughout the 1920s. He became famous from his work accompanying Bessie Smith, recording over 30 records. She stated that Smith was her preferred cornetist when recording, due to his reserved additions to her voice. Ripley, Ohio
Ripley is a village in Union Township, Brown County, Ohio, United States, along the Ohio River 50 miles southeast of Cincinnati. The population was 1,750 at the 2010 census. History Colonel James Poage, a veteran of the American Revolution, arrived in the free state of Ohio from Staunton, Virginia in 1804 to claim the he had been granted in what was called the Virginia Military District. Poage was among a large group of veterans who received land grants in what was first organized as the Northwest Territory north of the Ohio River for their service in the American Revolutionary War, and freed their slaves when they settled there. Poage and his family laid out the town of Staunton in 1812; it was renamed in 1816 to honor General Eleazar Wheelock Ripley, an American officer of the War of 1812. Russell Taylor "Pops" Smith (February 5, 1890 – March 27, 1966) was an American jazz trumpeter. Early life Smith was born in Ripley, Ohio. Smith learned alto horn as a child, and switched to trumpet when he was fourteen years old. He played in local bands as a teenager and relocated to New York City in 1910. Career By 1915, Smith was playing in London with Joe Jordan's orchestra. In the late 1910s and early 1920s he found work playing stage revues and in military bands. He became a member of Fletcher Henderson's band in 1925, remaining with Henderson intermittently until 1941. During that time, he also played in the ''Blackbirds of 1928'' revue and, in the mid-1930s, with Horace Henderson, Benny Carter, and Claude Hopkins. From 1941 to 1946, he played in Cab Calloway's group, then worked with Noble Sissle toward the end of the 1940s. He moved to California in the 1950s, where he lived the rest of his life. Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music.
