''KPIX Dance Party'' was an afternoon television show hosted by Dick Stewart which was broadcast on CBS KPIX-TV Channel 5 in San Francisco. It ran from 1959 to 1963. It featured teenagers dancing to popular music. Background The original host of the show was Ted Randall. After he resigned from the position, KPIX held some auditions to find a replacement. The winner of the auditions which were broadcast was Dick Stewart. His actual starting date with the show was February 23, 1959. Stewart was a musician in his own right, having led his own band. He was also an actor. The director and producer of the show was Bill Hollenbeck, formerly of KGO-TV where he had held the positions of producer, director and program manager. Dick Stewart (born February 11, 1927) is an American singer, bandleader, actor, television host, and author. From 1959 to 1963, he hosted the popular televised music show, ''KPIX Dance Party''. Background In addition to being a television show host, Stewart was a singer, and had led his own band. He was also an actor. He was also a radio DJ for KFSO on Sundays with an hour show. Actor Stewart had a few acting roles. One was as Everett in the 1953 film ''The Glass Web'' which was directed by Jack Arnold. Sylvester Stewart (born March 15, 1943), better known by his stage name Sly Stone, is an American musician, songwriter, and record producer who is most famous for his role as frontman for Sly and the Family Stone, playing a critical role in the development of funk with his pioneering fusion of soul, rock, psychedelia and gospel in the 1960s and 1970s. Anne Randall (born Barbara Burrus; September 23, 1944) is an American model and actress. She was ''Playboy'' magazine's Playmate of the Month for its May 1967 issue. Her centerfold was photographed by Mario Casilli. Janet Ericco
Jan Errico is a drummer and singer who was a member of two San Francisco rock groups in the 1960s, The Vejtables and The Mojo Men. Background She is the daughter of Vincent Errico who, himself was an accomplished drummer. She is the cousin of Greg Errico, the original drummer for Sly and the Family Stone. It has been written that she changed her name from Errico to Ashton to sound more British. Female drummers in rock bands in that era were rather rare. Career In 1962 or 1963, when she was around age 12, she recorded the single "It Was A Lie" (bw "Come Along With Me") for the Shelby Records label. The backing group was credited as The Twilights, who were really Joe Piazza and the Continentals. By 1964, she was a member of The Vejtables, both singing backup and playing drums. While with the Vejtables she contributed to a good part of their written material including their minor hit, " I Still Love You", which she sang lead on. The Viscaynes
The Viscaynes were an American doo-wop group from Vallejo, California, United States, that released a few singles in the early 1960s. They also had a regional hit with the song "Yellow Moon". One of their members Sylvester Stewart, later known as Sly Stone would front the multi-racial group Sly & the Family Stone. They were unique in being one of the very few integrated doo-wop groups of their time. Background The Viscaynes were a high school group that Sylvester Stewart became a member of.
