Joseph Dwight Newman (September 7, 1922 – July 4, 1992) was an American jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator, best known as a musician who worked with Count Basie during two periods. Early life and education Newman was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Dwight, (pianist) and Louise Newman, a musical family, having his first music lessons from David Jones. He attended Alabama State College, where he joined the college band (the Bama State Collegians), became its leader, and took it on tour. Career In 1941, he joined Lionel Hampton for two years, before signing with Count Basie, with whom he stayed for a total of thirteen years, interrupted by short breaks and a long period (1947–1952) spent first with saxophonist Illinois Jacquet and then drummer J. C. Heard. During his second period with Basie, which lasted for about nine years, he made a number of small-group recordings as the leader. Joey Newman (born September 9, 1976) is an American film composer, orchestrator, arranger and conductor working in the fields of film and television. Early life, family and education Newman is a third generation film composer, born into a musical family. His father was Joe Frank Carollo, a Mississippi-born rock/R&B bass player who played with the T-Bones in the 1960s and the pop group Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds in the 1970s. Newman's mother, Jenifer Newman, was a classically trained ballet dancer who danced with the New York City Ballet and the Boston Repertory Ballet. His grandfather was Lionel Newman, the Oscar-winning composer/conductor who headed 20th Century Fox's Music Department for 47 years after Lionel's older brother and nine-time Oscar winner, Alfred Newman, retired. Joseph Simon Newman (December 6, 1891 – November 10, 1960) was an American entrepreneur and writer. He was a founder of the Newman-Stern Company, and gained renown as a writer of both light and serious verse. Biography Joseph Newman was born in New London, Ohio, the son of Simon and Hanna Cohn Newman, who then moved to Cleveland. A graduate of Central High School, Newman attended the Case Institute of Technology before withdrawing to go into business. He married Babette Weidenthal, daughter of Cleveland journalist Maurice Weidenthal, in 1913. Two years later, with brother Arthur Samuel Newman and partner Arnold Stern, he founded the Electro-Set Co. to manufacture educational toys, some being his own inventions. The firm soon added sporting goods to its line and became the Newman-Stern Company. Joseph Newman (December 11, 1912 – April 15, 1995) was an American journalist and writer from New York City. He worked for the ''New York Herald Tribune'' under George Cornish as a Japan correspondent, living in Japan with his wife Mary. Japan During his period of residence in Japan, he made contacts with other foreign residents, journalists and some important personalities linked with the Japanese government, and became known for his in-depth reporting on the local military-political establishment before the outbreak of the Pacific War. He was acquainted with members of the German and Italian communities, and had connections in the Japanese Army and Navy ministries. From these sources he was able to file reports with the American media, later writing the book '' Goodbye Japan'', where he related his experiences there. Joseph Newman (Texas Settler)
Joseph Newman (c. 1787–1831) moved to Texas and became one of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred colonists. In 1806, he married Rachel Rabb in Ohio. Their family, which eventually expanded to include ten children, moved first to Illinois Territory and by 1820 was living along the Red River in Spanish Texas. In 1824, the Newmans and Rabbs moved to a land grant in modern-day Wharton County, Texas where they farmed and ranched. Joseph died in 1831 but his wife lived until 1872. Joseph Newman (1815 – 4 January 1892) was a 19th-century Member of Parliament in the Waikato, New Zealand. Biography Newman was born in Willoughby, Lincolnshire in 1815 to a small farmer of the same name. Mehetabel Newman was a younger sister. Another sister was Elizabeth Newman, who became the second wife of William Thomas Fairburn and died in childbirth in 1847. Newman received his education at the nearby Alford Grammar School and then worked in the flour milling and grain-buying business. He became a teetotaller as a young man. He applied to become a missionary for the London Missionary Society but was not chosen. Newman came to New Zealand on the ''James'' in 1840, travelling in the company of several missionaries.
