Joe Maddock (coach)
Joseph Herbert Maddock (July 11, 1877 – November 11, 1943) was an American college football player and coach. He was an All-Western tackle for the University of Michigan's "Point-a-Minute" football teams in 1902 and 1903. He also set a Western Conference record in the hammer throw. He later served as a head football coach at the University of Utah, where he compiled a record of 28–9–1 between 1904 and 1909. Biography Athlete Maddock was born in East Jordan, Michigan and began his collegiate career at Albion College. In 1901, the 24-year-old Maddock played for Albion football coach Chester Brewer who taught him the "Wisconsin style of tackle play." Maddock was so effective against the University of Michigan in 1901 that Coach Fielding H. Yost enticed him to transfer to Michigan. East Jordan, Michigan
East Jordan is a city in Charlevoix County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,239 at the 2020 census. The city is at the end of the south arm of Lake Charlevoix at the mouth of the Jordan River. The corporate headquarters of EJ, an international company formerly known as East Jordan Iron Works, is located in East Jordan. EJ was founded in East Jordan in 1883. The 1908 University of Utah football team was an American football team that represented the University of Utah as an independent during the 1908 college football season. In its fifth season under head coach Joe Maddock, the team compiled a 4–2–1 record and outscored all opponents by a total of 206 to 49. The team played its home games at Cummings Field in Salt Lake City. Fullback "Dad" Covill was the team captain. Utah met Idaho for the first time, in the season finale on Thanksgiving. 1908 College Football Season
The 1908 college football season ran from Saturday, September 19, to November 28. The Penn Quakers and the Harvard Crimson each finished the season unbeaten but with one tied. The LSU Tigers went unbeaten and untied against a weaker opposition. All three teams were named national champions retroactively by various organizations. Only Pennsylvania officially claims a national championship for the 1908 season. Although there was no provision for a national championship, major teams played their regular schedules before facing their most difficult matches late in the season. 1907 College Football Season
The 1907 college football season saw the increased use of the forward pass, which had been legalized the year before. Football remained a dangerous game, despite the "debrutalization" reforms, and an unprecedented eleven players were killed (9 high school and 2 college), while 98 others were seriously injured. However, there were no serious injuries reported among the major colleges. The Yale Bulldogs, unbeaten with a record of 10–0–1, had the best record. The Helms Athletic Foundation, founded in 1936, declared retroactively that Yale had been the best college football team of 1907. Yale and Penn both claim 1907 as a national championship season. Although Yale was named as champion by 6 different entities, Penn was not named champion by any. Penn's claim to the championship is only by the university itself. The 1905 University of Utah football team was an American football team that represented the University of Utah as an independent during the 1905 college football season. In its second season under head coach Joe Maddock, the team compiled a 6–2 record, shut out five of eight opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 260 to 74. The 1904 University of Utah football team was an American football team that represented the University of Utah as an independent during the 1904 college football season. In its first season under head coach Joe Maddock, the team compiled a 7–1 record, shut out six of eight opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 301 to 38. Quarterback Jimmy Wade was the team captain. The team shut out three opponents in eight days in three cities: on October 29 at (12–0); on October 31 at Wyoming (23–0); and on November 5 at home against the soldiers from Fort Douglas (107–5). The team's 107 points against Fort Douglas was a school record at the time and remains the second-highest point total in school history.
