Joe Holland (skier)
Joseph Johnston Holland (born December 11, 1964) is an American former nordic combined skier and ski jumper who competed in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Biography Holland's best finish at the Olympic Winter Games was eighth in the 3 x 10 km event at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. Holland also competed at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. A native of Norwich, Vermont, Holland was the leading U.S. Nordic combined skier in the late 1980s to early 1990s (4 time national champion). Holland's top world cup finish was 11th place twice (1991, 1992), and he was among the top 10 at the World Junior Championships in his last year as a junior. Nordic combined is a winter sport in which athletes compete in cross-country skiing (sport), cross-country skiing and ski jumping. The Nordic combined at the Winter Olympics has been held since the first ever 1924 Winter Olympics, Winter Olympics in 1924, while the FIS Nordic Combined World Cup has been held since 1983. Many Nordic combined competitions use the Gundersen method, where placement in the ski jumping segment results in time (dis)advantages added to the contestant's total in the cross-country skiing segment (e.g. the ski jumping winner starts the cross-country skiing race at 00:00:00 while the one with the lowest jumping score starts with the longest time penalty). Mike Holland (ski Jumper)
Michael Harry Holland (born 9 December 1961) is an American former ski jumper. He was world distance record holder for 27 minutes, surpassed shortly after by Matti Nykänen in 1985. Biography A native of Norwich, Vermont, Holland was a five time U.S. national champion. Holland competed in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. On 15 March 1985, he set the ski jumping distance world record at 186 metres (610 ft) on Velikanka bratov Gorišek in Planica, Slovenia. And became only the second man to jump over 600 feet barrier. This world record was held for only 27 minutes before Finnish jumper Matti Nykänen passed his mark with a jump one meter longer. Norwich is a town in Windsor County, in the U.S. state of Vermont. The population was 3,612 at the 2020 census. Ski jumping is a winter sport in which competitors aim to achieve the farthest jump after sliding down on their skis from a specially designed curved ramp. Along with jump length, competitor's aerial style and other factors also affect the final score. Ski jumping was first contested in Norway in the late 19th century, and later spread through Europe and North America in the early 20th century. Along with cross-country skiing, it constitutes the traditional group of Nordic skiing disciplines. The ski jumping venue, commonly referred to as a ''hill'', consists of the jumping ramp (''in-run''), take-off table, and a landing hill. Each jump is evaluated according to the distance traveled and the style performed.
