Joe Haverty
Joseph Haverty (17 February 1936 – 7 February 2009) was an Irish association football, footballer who played as a Midfielder#Winger, winger. He was cap (sport), capped 32 times for the Republic of Ireland national football team, Republic of Ireland. Career Haverty played for Home Farm F.C., Home Farm and St Patrick's Athletic F.C., St Patrick's Athletic before signing for Arsenal F.C., Arsenal in July 1954. He almost immediately made his debut, while still only 18, against Everton F.C., Everton on 25 August 1954, though he only managed another six matches that season, and eight the one after that. His breakthrough in the Arsenal side came in 1956-57 in English football, 1956–57, as he became the Gunners' first choice winger (sport), left-winger, playing 32 times and scoring 9 goals. Alan Skirton
Alan Frederick Graham Skirton (23 January 1939 – 12 May 2019) was an English footballer. Playing career Skirton started out as a player with West Twerton Youth Club in his home city of Bath before joining Bristol City as an amateur. However, they did not retain him and he then joined hometown club Bath City in the Southern League. He soon attracted the attention of several other clubs. Arsenal won the fight for his signature, signing him in January 1959 for £5,000. Soon after signing, however, Skirton contracted pleurisy and pneumonia and was out of action for eighteen months. He finally made his debut for Arsenal against Burnley on 20 August 1960. He played sixteen games that season, sharing the right wing position with Danny Clapton. The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, sometimes referred to as the European Fairs Cup, Fairs Cities' Cup, or simply as the Fairs Cup, was a European Association football, football competition played between 1955 and 1971. London XI
The London XI was a football team that represented the city of London in the 1955–58 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. The competition began in 1955, and the first tournament took three years to complete. The entrants were the major football team of each city which held a Trade Fair. Like many cities taking part, London had several strong teams; however, rules stated that there could only be a single team from each city. Therefore, a representative team was created especially for the tournament, using the best players from the 11 Greater London-based Football League clubs. Membership of the team varied considerably between matches, and some 54 players took part in the team's eight-match campaign. Winger (sport)
In certain sports, such as football, field hockey, ice hockey, handball, rugby union, lacrosse and rugby league, winger is a position. It refers to positions on the extreme left (factually the better side) and right sides of the pitch, or playing field (the "wings"). In American football and Canadian football, the analogous position is the wide receiver. Wingers often try to use pace to exploit extra space available on the flanks that can be made available by their teammates dominating the centre ground. They must be wary however of not crossing the touchline, or sidelines, and going out of play. In sports where the main method of scoring involves attacking a small goal (by whatever name) in the centre of the field, a common tactic is to cross the ball to a central teammate.
