Joe Fortunato (born January 1, 1955) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. Career Fortunato was selected by the New York Islanders in the third round (47th overall) of the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft, and was also drafted by the Cleveland Crusaders in the 8th round (104th overall) of the 1975 WHA Amateur Draft. Fortunato played professional hockey for two seasons (1975–76 and 1976–77), recording 68 games in the minor leagues and one game in the World Hockey Association with the Edmonton Oilers The Edmonton Oilers are a professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton. World Hockey Association
The World Hockey Association (french: Association mondiale de hockey) was a professional ice hockey major league that operated in North America from 1972 to 1979. It was the first major league to compete with the National Hockey League (NHL) since the collapse of the Western Hockey League in 1926. Although the WHA was not the first league since that time to attempt to challenge the NHL's supremacy, it was by far the most successful in the modern era. The WHA tried to capitalize on the lack of hockey teams in a number of major American cities and mid-level Canadian cities, and also hoped to attract the best players by paying more than NHL owners would. 1975 NHL Amateur Draft
The 1975 NHL Amateur Draft was the 13th NHL Entry Draft. It was held at the NHL office in Montreal, Quebec. The two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Philadelphia Flyers made the most noise at the draft, trading Bill Clement, Don McLean, and the 18th overall pick to the Washington Capitals for the number one overall selection, which they used to select Mel Bridgman. Later in round nine the Flyers became the first NHL team to select a Soviet-born and trained player in the amateur draft, selecting Latvian Viktor Khatulev 160th overall.
