Joe Baltake
Joseph John Baltake Jr. (September 16, 1945 – March 26, 2020) was an American film critic, film historian, author of the film blog The Passionate Moviegoer, and a biographer of the actor Jack Lemmon. His work was syndicated by Knight-Ridder, Scripps Howard News Service, and the McClatchy wire services. Career Baltake's film reviewing career started at Gannett's suburban newspaper group, where his critiques appeared in several New Jersey-based newspapers and continued at Knight-Ridder's ''The Philadelphia Daily News'' and McClatchy's ''The Sacramento Bee''. He was the first-string film critic at both dailies. In all, he estimated that he professionally reviewed about 7,000 films throughout his career. Performing Animal Welfare Society
The Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is a U.S.-based group for abandoned or abused performing animals as well as victims of the exotic animal trade. They claim 30,000 members. As a member accredited by The Association of Sanctuaries (TAOS), the society follows guidelines stipulated by TAOS, one of which is that none of the elephants be bred. History Founded by former Hollywood animal trainer and author Pat Derby and partner Ed Stewart, PAWS works to ensure that animals are protected by the Endangered Species and the Animal Welfare Acts, as well as by local laws. In 2007, with the arrival of a retired circus elephant named Nicholas, PAWS' ARK 2000 became the first sanctuary in the United States to house bull elephants. ''Hoop Dreams'' is a 1994 American documentary film directed by Steve James, and produced by Frederick Marx, James, and Peter Gilbert, with Kartemquin Films. It follows the story of two African-American high school students, William Gates and Arthur Agee, in Chicago and their dream of becoming professional basketball players. ''Hoop Dreams'' was originally intended to be a 30-minute short film produced for PBS; the filming of the special led to five years of filming and 250 hours of footage. ''Hoop Dreams'' premiered at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary.
