Joe Bailey Metcalf
Joe Bailey Metcalf (Oklahoma, August 11, 1901 – Oklahoma, September 7, 1979) was an American football coach who served as head football coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State University from 1952 to 1957. He compiled a record of 32–21–2 for the Bulldogs. As a high school coach before moving into the college ranks, Metcalf had coached Darrell Royal and Ted Owens on the Hollis, Oklahoma Tigers football team. He also coached Owens in basketball, discouraging the future legendary Kansas basketball coach of toying with the jump shot, in favor of the tried and true set shot. After retiring as head coach of the Texas Longhorns, Darrell Royal would mention that even at the end of his coaching career in 1976, he was still using the principles learned from two men; Bud Wilkinson at the University of Oklahoma, and Joe Bailey Metcalf of Hollis High School and Southwestern Oklahoma State. Harmon County, Oklahoma
Harmon County is a county in the southwest corner of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 2,922, making it the second-least populous county in Oklahoma, behind only Cimarron County. It has lost population in every census since 1930. The county seat is Hollis. History Following an election on May 22, 1909, Harmon County was created by proclamation of Governor Lee Cruce on June 2. Carved from adjacent Greer County, the new county was named in honor of Judson Harmon, who was Governor of Ohio at the time. Southwestern Oklahoma State University
Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) is a public university in Weatherford and Sayre, Oklahoma. It is one of six Regional University System of Oklahoma members. History SWOSU was first established through an act of the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature in 1901 as Southwestern Normal School, although no classes were held until 1903. Several towns fought a court battle to become the home of the new school, but Weatherford won the battle. The normal school included both a two-year degree program for teacher education and a preparatory school. In 1920, the preparatory part of the school closed and a four-year baccalaureate degree program replaced it. The first bachelor's degrees by the renamed Southwestern State Teachers College were awarded in the spring of 1921. Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs Football
The Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs football program represents Southwestern Oklahoma State University in college football and competes in the Division II level of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). In 2011, SWOSU became a member of the Great American Conference. Prior to this, Southwestern Oklahoma State was a member of the Lone Star Conference from 1998 to 2010. SWOSU's home games are played at Milam in Weatherford, Oklahoma. The programs maintains an all time record of 471–486–37. American Football
American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, the team with possession of the oval-shaped football, attempts to advance down the field by running with the ball or passing it, while the defense, the team without possession of the ball, aims to stop the offense's advance and to take control of the ball for themselves. Darrell Royal
Darrell K Royal (July 6, 1924 – November 7, 2012) was an All-American football player and coach. He served as the head coach at Mississippi State University (1954–1955), the University of Washington (1956), and the University of Texas (1957–1976), compiling a career college football record of 184–60–5. In his 20 seasons at Texas, Royal's teams won three national championships (1963, 1969, and 1970), 11 Southwest Conference titles, and amassed a record of 167–47–5. He won more games than any other coach in Texas Longhorns football history. Royal also coached the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL) for one season in 1953. He never had a losing season as a head coach for his entire career. Royal was an All-American at the University of Oklahoma, where he played football from 1946 to 1949. Hollis is a city in and the county seat of Harmon County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,060 at the 2010 census. History The city was named for George W. Kansas Jayhawks Men's Basketball
The Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball program is the intercollegiate men's basketball program of the University of Kansas. The program is classified in the NCAA's Division I and the team competes in the Big 12 Conference. Jump Shot (basketball)
In basketball (and derivatives like netball), a player may attempt to score a basket by leaping straight into the air, the elbow of the shooting hand cocked, ball in hand above the head, and lancing the ball in a high arc towards the basket for a jump shot (colloquially, a jumper). Although early critics thought the leap might lead to indecision in the air, the jump shot replaced the earlier, less quickly released ''set shot'', and eventually transformed the game because it is the easiest shot to make from a distance and more difficult for a defender to block. The Texas Longhorns are the athletic teams representing the University of Texas at Austin. The teams are sometimes referred to as the Horns and take their name from Longhorn cattle that were an important part of the development of Texas, and are now the official "large animal" of the U.S. state of Texas. The Oklahoma Sooners men's basketball team represents the University of Oklahoma in men's NCAA Division I basketball. The Sooners play in the Big 12 Conference.
