Joanne Twomey
Joanne T. Twomey is a Maine politician. Twomey, a Maine Democratic Party, Democrat, represented part of Biddeford, Maine, Biddeford (District 135) from 1998 to 2006. She served on the agriculture, conservation and forestry; natural resources; engrossed bills committees, including a stint as chair of the engrossed bills. Twomey was elected Mayor of Biddeford in 2006 and was re-elected in 2008 and 2010. In November 2011, Twomey was defeated for re-election by State Representative Alan Casavant. On April 2, 2015, Twomey was ejected from a public meeting in Saco after she tossed a jar of Vaseline onstage after heated comments regarding Maine's budget. This was in response to LePage's previous comments in 2013 that "Democratic state Sen. Troy Jackson claims to be for the people, but he's the first one to give it to the people without providing Vaseline." Maine Democratic Party
The Maine Democratic Party is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the U.S. state of Maine. After the Civil War, Democrats were a minor player in a political scene dominated by the Republican Party. However, during the 1950s, Edmund Muskie led an expansive political insurgency culminating in his election as Governor of Maine and successive Democratic elections to both state and national offices. From 2012 to 2019, despite having a Republican governor in Paul LePage, the party remained strong, holding key offices in the state government and the U.S. Congress and maintaining a majority in the Maine House of Representatives for six of LePage's eight years in office. Biddeford is a city in York County, Maine, United States. It is the principal commercial center of York County. Its population was 22,552 at the 2020 census. Alan Casavant
Alan M. Casavant (born July 26, 1952) is an American politician from Maine. Casavant, a Democrat, represented District 137 in the Maine House of Representatives from 2006 to 2014. District 137 comprised portions of Biddeford and Kennebunk. Casavant was unable to seek re-election in 2014 due to term-limits. Casavant is also the elected Mayor of Biddeford, holding that position since November 2011 when he defeated incumbent Mayor Joanne Twomey. His support grew in the 2017 election. He served as a Biddeford City Council member from 1976 to 1992. He retired as a teacher at Biddeford High School in 2012. Casavant earned a B.S.
