Joan Of Arc (band)
Joan of Arc was an American indie rock band from Chicago, Illinois named after the French saint Joan of Arc. They formed in 1995, following the breakup of Cap'n Jazz. Singer Tim Kinsella has been the only permanent member of the group; he has also recorded as a solo artist. Joan of Arc are known for their use of electronics, samples, and multi-track recording in their songs; some songs on ''The Gap'' contained over 100 tracks. Joan of Arc's lyrics and cover art are often intentionally misleading, humorous, or confusing. For example, the album '' Live in Chicago, 1999'' is not a live album, but a reference to the fact that the band lived in Chicago in the year 1999. Victor Villareal (musician)
Victor Villarreal is an American musician and songwriter, best known for his role as guitarist in Cap'n Jazz, Owls and Joan of Arc. His music incorporates elements of classical, indie and emo, and contains surreal guitar solos and instrumentals. Biography Villarreal took up the guitar at the age of 12, and played in several bands with Tim Kinsella, his childhood friend. They performed as Cap'n Jazz, Owls and Joan of Arc. Villarreal also had Joan of Arc bassist Erik Bocek perform in Villarreal's own group, Ghosts and Vodka. Having worked at a dog hospital, Villarreal later started a dog-training program called "Everything Canine." Villarreal returned to making music after his brother died, releasing the albums, "Sleep Talk" and "Invisible Cinema" through Joyful Noise Recordings in Indianapolis. Make Believe (band)
Make Believe was an indie rock band, initially formed as a touring version of Joan of Arc. The band was initially composed of eccentric voiced singer Tim Kinsella, guitarist Sam Zurick, bassist Bobby Burg, and drummer/keyboardist Nate Kinsella. After 3 months of touring as Joan Of Arc the quartet returned home and decided to begin writing new songs with a more aggressive approach. Following a self-titled 5 track EP, their first full-length ''Shock of Being'' was released on October 4, 2005, followed by ''Of Course'' in 2006. On June 20, 2007, Tim Kinsella announced on the Joan of Arc website that he was no longer a member of Make Believe. He attributed his departure to feeling a lessening connection to the "rock band lifestyle", and to a desire to spend more time with his wife. Owls (band)
Owls are an indie rock band from Chicago, Illinois. They were initially active from 2001-2002 and reunited in 2012. The band is composed of the original lineup of the emo band Cap'n Jazz excluding guitarist Davey von Bohlen, who had left to form The Promise Ring. The lineup has included brothers Tim Kinsella and Mike Kinsella (vocals and drums, respectively), guitarist Victor Villareal and bassist Sam Zurick. Tim Kinsella and Zurick have also played together in Joan of Arc and Make Believe. Villarreal and Zurick played together in the instrumental rock group Ghosts and Vodka. The band signed to Jade Tree on May 3, 2001, and released their debut on July 31. Owls reunited in March 2012. The band announced via Facebook on July 22, 2013 that they had completed work on a new record after 18 months of writing and were heading into the studio to record their second studio album. American Football (band)
American Football (sometimes stylised in all lowercase as american football or americ anfootball) is an American rock band from Urbana, Illinois, originally active from 1997 until 2000, and again beginning with 2014 and onwards. The band was formed by guitarist/bassist and singer Mike Kinsella (formerly of Cap'n Jazz and Joan of Arc and currently of Owen), guitarist Steve Holmes (also a member of the Geese) and drummer and trumpet playeSteve Lamos(formerly of the One Up Downstairs, one-time member of the Firebird Band and Edward Burch & the Staunch Characters, and currently of the Geese and DMS), who has since left the band. Califone
Califone is an experimental rock band from Chicago. The band is named after Califone International, an audio equipment manufacturer. Their work has been critically acclaimed. Roots & Crowns review AllMusic Califone has released an album and feature film, both of which are titled '' All My Friends Are Funeral Singers''. The album was released October 6, 2009 on Dead Oceans. The feature film was made available in 2010, and the band toured as a live soundtrack to the film. ''All My Friends Are Funeral Singers'' is the follow-up album to 2006's '' Roots & Crowns'', which ''The New York Times'' called "enthralling." In 2011, a feature-length tour documentary about Califone, called "Made a Machine by Describing the Landscape", was released by IndiePix. ''Live in Chicago, 1999'' is an album by Joan of Arc, released in 1999. It is not an album of live material, but is rather named after the fact that the band members lived in Chicago in the year 1999. Production ''Live in Chicago, 1999'' was recorded mainly at Classsicks, with some recording being done at Truckstop West and Sherry and Lenora's house. Casey Rice served as producer and handled recording, while additional recording was done by Elliot Dicks on half of the songs. Scott Adamson did additional recording and editing on tracks 1 and 6. Rice mixed the recordings, before the album was mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music in New Jersey. Sampling (music)
In sound and music, sampling is the reuse of a portion (or sample) of a sound recording in another recording. Samples may comprise elements such as rhythm, melody, speech, sounds or entire bars of music, and may be layered, equalized, sped up or slowed down, repitched, looped, or otherwise manipulated. They are usually integrated using hardware ( samplers) or software such as digital audio workstations. A process similar to sampling originated in the 1940s with '' musique concrète'', experimental music created by splicing and looping tape. The mid-20th century saw the introduction of keyboard instruments that played sounds recorded on tape, such as the Mellotron.
