Jiří Pauer
Jiří Pauer (22 February 1919 in Libušín, Czechoslovakia – 28 December 2007 in Prague, Czech Republic) was a Czech composer. Pauer studied first with Otakar Šín, then from 1943 to 1946 at the Prague Conservatory with Alois Hába, and finally with Pavel Bořkovec at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. He later taught for many years at the Academy where his pupils included composer Jiří Gemrot. He has composed many pieces, many of which focus on the brass orchestral instruments, symphonies, and further orchestra pieces, a bassoon concerto, a horn concerto and a trumpet concerto, chamber music pieces, and piano pieces. His opera ''Zdravý nemocný'', based on Molière's ''Le Malade imaginaire'', premiered at the Prague National Theatre on 22 May 1970. Libušín
Libušín is a town in Kladno District in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 3,300 inhabitants. Geography Libušín is located about northwest of Kladno and northwest of Prague. It lies mostly in the Prague Plateau. History According to archaeological finds, there was a Slavic settlement already in the 6th–7th century. At the end of the 9th century, a gord was built here. The first written mention of Libušín is from 1052. In 1277, it was donated to the Ostrov Monastery by King Ottokar II. In 1514, the Martinic family bought Libušín and owned it until the 20th century. In 1919, Libušín became a town, but for the period 1961–2006 it lost its town status. Economy In 1775, black coal was found near Libušín. The coal mining in the municipal territory started in 1885, when the first of three mines in Libušín was opened. The coal mining increased the town's population and accelerated its development. Ivo Žídek
Ivo Žídek (4 June 1926, Kravaře – 20 May 2003, Prague) was a Czech lyric tenor, known for his vivid portrayals of character roles in the operas of Smetana, Dvořák and Janáček. Early life Ivo Žídek was born in Kravaře, Czechoslovakia. He was descended from a long family line of music teachers and cantors. His father, Libor Žídek, was also an actor and a singer. As a youth, he was schooled in Ostrava where he studied painting because the local music schools had been closed under the Nazi occupation. However, he studied voice privately with Rudolf Vašek (at first, as a baritone) and studied music theory with Josef Schreiber. He was invited by conductor Zdeněk Chalabala to sing with the opera company in Ostrava, making his debut in the title role of Jules Massenet's Werther" in 1944. ''Zuzana Vojířová'' is an opera by Jiří Pauer to the composer's own libretto after the play of the same name by Jan Bor, which is itself based on a romance by František Kubka. The plot concerns the folk tale of nobleman Peter Vok's 30-year-long illicit romance with the miller-knight's daughter Zuzana Vojířová. The opera was written in a Janáček-like idiom and became one of the most successful post-war Czech operas, with 120 performances in Prague alone - long the most performed modern Czech opera.
