Jimmy Turnbull
James McLachlan Turnbull (born 23 May 1882) was a Scottish footballer who played as a forward, most notably for Manchester United, with whom he won the Football League and the FA Charity Shield in 1908 and the FA Cup in 1909. He was the first player to net a hat-trick in a Charity Shield game. Club career Turnbull played for Scottish clubs East Stirlingshire, Dundee, Falkirk and Rangers, before moving to England to sign for Preston North End and later the now dissolved Leyton. In May 1907 he was bought by Manchester United, where he won the 1907–08 Football League title, the 1908 FA Charity Shield and the 1908–09 FA Cup. He scored a total of 45 goals in 78 games for the club, with his best season being 1908–09, in which he scored 22 times in 28 appearances in all competitions. FA Charity Shield
The Football Association Community Shield (formerly the Charity Shield) is English football's annual match contested at Wembley Stadium between the champions of the previous Premier League season and the holders of the FA Cup. If the Premier League champions also won the FA Cup, then the league runners-up provide the opposition. The fixture is recognised as a competitive super cup by The Football Association and UEFA. Organised by the FA, proceeds from the game are distributed to community initiatives and charities around the country. Home Scots v Anglo-Scots was an annual association football trial match organised by the Scottish Football Association between the 1890s and 1920s to examine the abilities of possible players for upcoming full British Home Championship internationals, primarily the 'Auld Enemy' England v Scotland fixture. Selection trials were commonplace among football federations, but this match was unusual in that its regular format consisted of players based in one country (the 'homes') facing a selection of those who had moved to another country (the 'Anglos'), in order to form a combined team to oppose that other country's natives in international play. 1908–09 FA Cup
The 1908–09 FA Cup was the 38th staging of the world's oldest association football competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup (more usually known as the FA Cup). Manchester United won the competition for the first time, beating Bristol City 1–0 in the final at Crystal Palace, through a goal from Sandy Turnbull. Matches were scheduled to be played at the stadium of the team named first on the date specified for each round, which was always a Saturday. If scores were level after 90 minutes had been played, a replay would take place at the stadium of the second-named team later the same week. If the replayed match was drawn further replays would be held at neutral venues until a winner was determined. 1908 FA Charity Shield
The 1908 FA Charity Shield was the first Charity Shield, a football match contested by the winners of the previous season's Football League and Southern League competitions. It was intended as a replacement for the Sheriff of London Charity Shield, after The Football Association declined to provide a professional club to the organisers of that event for the annual amateurs vs. professionals match. The new match was subsequently arranged to take place at Chelsea F.C.'s home ground, Stamford Bridge.
