Jimmy Mullins (racing Driver)
James Joseph Mullins (17 July 1863 – 26 November 1911) was an Australian football player and track racing cyclist. His most emblematic win was in the third annual Austral Wheel Race in 1889. Australian Football Mullins, who was a carpenter by trade, ended up playing for five South Australian Football Association clubs: Victorians in 1882, South Park in 1884, Norwood in 1885 and 1886, South Adelaide in 1886 and West Adelaide in 1887. Cycling After finishing his football career he became a member of the Norwood Bicycle Club. In his new found sport he proved to be more successful, winning £400 in trophies in four years. The highlight of his career came on 23 November 1889. Norwood, South Australia
Norwood is a suburb of Adelaide, about east of the Adelaide city centre. The suburb is in the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters, whose predecessor was the oldest South Australian local government municipality. History Before British colonisation of South Australia and subsequent European settlement, Norwood was inhabited by one of the groups who later collectively became known as the Kaurna peoples. Early settler Edward Stephens, who arrived in the colony in 1839, wrote: "Norwood and Kent Town were unknown then. ''The Argus'' was an Australian daily morning newspaper in Melbourne from 2 June 1846 to 19 January 1957, and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period. Widely known as a conservative newspaper for most of its history, it adopted a left-leaning approach from 1949. ''The Argus''s main competitor was David Syme's more liberal-minded newspaper, ''The Age''. History The newspaper was originally owned by William Kerr, who was also Melbourne's town clerk from 1851–1856 and had been a journalist at the ''Sydney Gazette'' before moving to Melbourne in 1839 to work on John Pascoe Fawkner's newspaper, the '' Port Phillip Patriot''. Penny-farthing
The penny-farthing, also known as a high wheel, high wheeler or ordinary, is an early type of bicycle. It was popular in the 1870s and 1880s, with its large front wheel providing high speeds (owing to its travelling a large distance for every rotation of the legs) and comfort (the large wheel provides greater shock absorption). It became obsolete in the late 1880s with the development of modern bicycles, which provided similar speed amplification via chain-driven gear trains and comfort through pneumatic tires, and were marketed in comparison to penny-farthings as "safety bicycles" because of the reduced danger of falling and the reduced height to fall from. The name came from the British penny and farthing coins, the former being much larger than the latter, so that the side view resembles a larger penny (the front wheel) leading a smaller farthing (the rear wheel). The 1885 South Australian Football Association season was the 9th season of the top-level Australian rules football competition in South Australia. The Adelaide Football Club combined with North Parks from the Adelaide and Suburban Football Association and returned to the league in a standalone capacity for the first time since 1880 (it had merged with Kensington for the 1881 season, but resigned after five games). The 1885 SAFA season was the first time since 1878 that all clubs played a fixed number of games. Twenty three of the thirty games played had crowd figures quoted for an approximate average of 1,800 spectators per game.
