Jimmy Demianus Ijie
Jimmy Demianus Ijie (21 March 1968 – 23 July 2021) was an Indonesian politician from Southwest Papua. Biography He was a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the Indonesian Democratic Party - Struggle (PDI-P). He was elected in 2019 from the West Papua electoral district with 66,555 votes. He was born in Fategomi, Aitinyo Utara district, Maybrat Regency where he attended elementary school. In 1993, he graduated from Hasanuddin University in dentistry. In 2007, he completed a second bachelor in law at Jakarta University. He was working for the Center for Human Rights Education and Information in Jakarta from 1993 to 1999. From 2004 to 2014, he was working as a chairperson at the Regional People's Legislative Assembly. Southwest Papua
Southwest Papua ( id, Papua Barat Daya) is a province of Indonesia, and is a fraction of Western New Guinea. Despite being named southwest, it is a misnomer and this province is actually located in the northwest edge of Papua. The area that belongs to this province includes the Greater Sorong area which consists of Sorong City, Sorong Regency, South Sorong Regency, Maybrat Regency, Tambrauw Regency, and Raja Ampat Regency. The Draft Law (RUU) on the Establishment of the Southwest Papua Province has been passed into law and becomes the 38th province in Indonesia. Southwest Papua is located at the northwestern tip of an area called the Doberai Peninsula or the Bird's Head Peninsula. The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle ( id, Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan, PDI-P) is an Indonesian political party, and the party of the current President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo. The PDI-P was founded and is currently led by Megawati Sukarnoputri, president of Indonesia from 2001 to 2004, and daughter of Sukarno, the first president of Indonesia. Megawati was forced out from the leadership of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) by the government of Indonesia under Suharto in 1996. Megawati formed the PDI-P in 1999, after Suharto resigned and restrictions on political parties were lifted. The party's ideology is based on the official Indonesian national philosophy, ''Pancasila'', and is considered as conservative-left. Maybrat Regency is a regency of Southwest Papua Province of Indonesia. 2019 Papua Protests
The 2019 Papua protests were a series of protests by Papuans in Indonesia that began on 19 August 2019 and mainly took place across Indonesian Papua region in response to the arrests of 43 Papuan students in Surabaya, East Java for alleged disrespect of the Indonesian flag. Many of the protests involved thousands of participants, and some grew from local protests in Surabaya to demanding an independence referendum for the whole region. In several locations, the protests turned into general riots, resulting in the destruction of government buildings in Wamena, Sorong and Jayapura. Clashes between protesters and police resulted in injuries, with over 30 people killed from both the clashes and the rioting. In response to the rioting, the government of Indonesia implemented an internet blackout in the region. Papuan People
The indigenous peoples of West Papua in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, commonly called Papuans, are Melanesians. There is genetic evidence for two major historical lineages in New Guinea and neighboring islands: a first wave from the Malay Archipelago perhaps 50,000 years ago when New Guinea and Australia were a single landmass called Sahuland, much later, a wave of Austronesian people from the north who introduced Austronesian languages and pigs about 3,500 years ago.
