James Thompson was a leading early cartographer. He produced one of the first maps of York – his ''Plan of the City of York and Ainsty'' (1785), which was based on the work of Francis White. James Pyke Thompson
James Pyke Thompson (1846–1897) was a British corn merchant who is best known for his philanthropic work towards the people of Cardiff and Penarth in South Wales. Born into a wealthy family in Bridgwater, Somerset, Thompson joined his father as director of Spiller & Co., Cardiff, one of the largest milling companies in Britain. Thompson was an art collector and was a particular admirer of British watercolours. James Banford Thompson
James Banford Thompson (1832 – 18 November 1901) was an Irish-born politician, surveyor and land valuer in New South Wales, Australia. He was born in Fintona, County Tyrone, to postmaster William Thompson and Jane Jeffries. His date of birth is uncertain: his parliamentary biography lists him as born in 1832, which would make him aged at his death, while the notice of his death lists his age as 72, which would mean he was born in . His family migrated to Australia around 1836. He worked as a licensed surveyor, and on 11 February 1861 married Margaret Catherine Carroll; they would have twelve children. In 1877 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Queanbeyan, serving until his resignation in 1881, to accept an appointment as a railway land valuer. James Thompson, or Thomson, (26 August 1824 - 7 June 1899) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for one term between 1856 and 1857. Early life Thompson was born in Port Dalrymple, Tasmania to Lieutenant Thomas Thompson and Eliza Reibey, a daughter of Mary Reibey. In 1847 Thompson moved to Burrier, near what is now Nowra, a property owned by his grandmother Mary. In 1848 Thompson was appointed a magistrate. James Thompson (October 1, 1806 – January 28, 1874) was a lawyer, politician and jurist from Pennsylvania. He served in the United States Congress and in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, where he was Speaker in 1835. He also served as a federal judge and as a member of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Life and career Thompson was born in Middlesex Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania on October 1, 1806. After learning the printing trade, Thompson studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1829 and practiced as a lawyer in Erie, Pennsylvania. Thompson served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1832–1834 and in 1855 and served as Speaker in 1834. He was one of the longest-held American prisoner of war in U.S. history that was returned or captured by troops, spending nearly nine years in captivity in the forests and mountains of South Vietnam and Laos, and in North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Brothers Allen Thompson (October 1, 1847 – February 27, 1906) and James Granville Thompson (December 25, 1849 – May 23, 1921) were Union Army soldiers during the American Civil War and recipients of the highest decoration of the United States military, the Medal of Honor. They are one of only a few pairs of brothers to have received the medal. Biography Both brothers enlisted as privates in the 4th New York Heavy Artillery Regiment; Allen joined from Port Jarvis, New York in June 1863, and was assigned to Company I, while James joined from Sandy Creek, New York in February 1864, and was assigned to Company K; both brothers claimed to be 18 years old at the time of their enlistments. William James Thompson (1830 – 5 December 1891) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Details Thompson was about 27 years old, and a private in the 1st Battalion, 60th Rifles (King's Royal Rifle Corps), British Army during the Indian Mutiny when the following deed took place on 9 July 1857 at Delhi, British India Thompson was one of five men of the 1/60th elected under Section 13 of the Royal Warrant to receive the Victoria Cross for the Siege of Delhi. Two months later he was badly wounded in the assault on Delhi on 14 September 1857, the opening day of the battle that lasted until 20 September 1857 when the city was cleared of insurgents.
